It's hard to believe HD will really offer much in the way of true custom variation from the base template.  It's just not what they do.  It'll put them at cross purposes with dealer service departments who expect to make this money after the bikes are uncrated.  And they've already shown they can't get a 100% accuracy assembling the "custom" CVO bikes on the line as they're trying to do now.  However....  just the idea in my head of what someone could do with such a program if it actually fulfilled our dreams and Harley was actually good at that sort of thing anymore is enough to give me a woody.

No way MOCO can't get the simple parts installed correctly a lot of the time!

Glad this program has developed! I have said before that my thoughts are that Harley could stay competitive in the down economy if they started a program like this.I would think it helps with inventory if they take advance orders, that way they only order a certain number of specific parts instead of guessing what may be popular.
They would be able to make a customer's dreams come true for a personalized bike without a lot of shop time or a garage full of takeoff parts and probably do it cheaper than a smaller custom bike builder. This might attract a younger rider too who just wants to throw a leg over a bike and ride.
Nice to see them trying to do more than just lowering a seat and painting things black to get young riders on board.

Factory Customization from Harley-Davidson but only offered on Sportster models.

Gee that totally renews my faith that somebody at the MoCo HQ has their head screwed on straight - - - -- - -

More on this.....

In February 2011, we will launch our newest innovation, H-D1 factory customization, in conjunction with the launch of the new 1200 Custom motorcycle. H-D1 factory customization will allow customers to create their personalized 1200 Custom from select OE options.  This will take Harley-Davidson customization to a whole new level by allowing customers the ability to begin the personalization of their motorcycle before the bike arrives at their dealership’s door.  A 1200 Custom with factory customization can only be ordered in a Harley-Davidson dealership and that is where a customer can really discover all you have to offer.  H-D1 factory customization, will be an important addition to our customization portfolio and will generate additional attention and interest in H-D1 and Harley-Davidson overall.

It will be interesting how this program works and if it will rollover to other models. Wouldn't be surprised if the MoCo is using this as a testing ground to see how well it is received. Makes more sense starting w/one model... see how it's received before going full fledge on all models.

Under "Fit Shop" it says,

Pick a bike, any Harley bike--brand new or the one in your garage--and your local Harley dealer
will tailor it to your measurements and personal taste.

Not sure about everyone else but when it reads "Any Harley bike" I would think that means ANY BIKE?

Maybe I'm seeing something no one else is but, , ,
Just sayin, , ,

Gary, if they roll it out to the CVO line the options could be daunting.  Can just imagine the checklist a bewildered customer would have to choose from:

Customization Options: Choose All That Apply
( ) Peeling Chrome
( ) Fading Paint
( ) Special High Velocity Finger Prints Under Clear Coat
( ) Peeling Granite
( ) Mismatched Body Panels
( ) Outside Oiling "HP" Head Gaskets
( ) Counter Centrifugal Crankshafts w/Special SE Oil Pump Wear Concentricity Built In
( ) Scissor Proof Crank Position Sensors
( ) SE "Low Drop" Valve Guides
( ) SE "Negative Tolerance" Rocker Boxes
( ) HP Dunlop "Pre Potholed" Tread Wire Tires (see mftr for Warranty)

I must have missed that.
To me, they are alluding that it may happen but I missed it if it's in print.
