Whats your prefered engine oil?
« on: January 13, 2011, 08:38:43 PM »

Anybody have some good facts about engine oil?  Mobil 1, Amsoil, HD, Royal Purple?  Durability, heat, issues, fuel economy.  Anything?  My Ultra had new cylinders after 25000 miles due to wear and burning oil.  Always had HD synthetic and I am wondering if there is something better?

None of the above, although several of the oil's you listed are quality products...

I prefer Redline Synthetic

Red Line
Amsoil
Mobile 1

In this order in my opinion.  Althought I will not argue about order as all 3 are very good true synthetics.

Syn3 is pure crap & I think there are many concerns about Royal Purple although I have no personal experience with it.

I knew one of the chemists that developed All Proof, it turned into Red Line.  I have used All Proof/Red Line since 1979 with absolute success everywhere I use it.

If you do some searches here you will find actual info we have all posted & links to other if.

Just sayin....

That was helpful.

Hey, Harley now has 2 different synthetic oils, the SYn3 and the Screamin Eagle  Synthetic Blend.  What's the difference between the two?

The difference is implied in the names of the products.  SYN 3 is a full synthetic, the other product is a "blend" of syn and dino oils at a lower price.

And yes, this subject has been beaten to death and there is another current thread running on the same subject, plus untold numbers of threads from the distant as well as near past.  It all boils down to ignoring the advertising hype and finding a product that meets or exceeds all manufacturer requirements for your vehicle and is readily available at a reasonable price.  There is no single "best" motor oil.  Each product has better results in some tests and worse results in others, and this is just basic economics.  The products are formulated to meet specifications AT A VIABLE COST.  If money were no object, I suppose someone could formulate a product that would come in first in all tests.  I'm not so sure there would be much of a mass market for $40 per quart motor oil, however, even if a few CVO types would probably buy it so they could brag about how much they wasted spent.

The problems folks have been experiencing with their Harley engines aren't going to be "fixed" by using a certain brand of oil.  No motor oil currently on the market can turn a sow's ear into a silk purse.

For sure.  Don't read much about engine failures due to lubrication problems.  Use a good quality oil (I prefer synthetic due to its better ability to withstand high temps) and change it as recommended.  :2vrolijk_21:

Sounds more like dirty air cleaner syndrome or a intake leak of some kind rather than a oil issue.

I don't have any great words of wisdom on the topic but when it comes to my bikes I use Mobil 1 Vtwin 20w-50 for the engine, 10w-40 for the primary, & their gear lube for the transmission.  Mobil-Exxon is a huge company with many engineers, chemists, and quality control people.  Their business is energy and I trust their products.

As a teen in the 70's, I can still remember going to the state fair and watching all the miracle products from flame resistant wax to teflon oil, distributor cap spark enhancers to vortex intake spacers, and gas additives that would grow hair on my chest and get me laid.  Now as an adult and a PhD Mechanical Engineer, I simply want to know it meets the specs for the motor and that I can trust it will be the same from batch to batch.

One thing about Mobil oil is that you can find it when you need it and when in a pinch, you can grab the 15w-50.

my 2 cents

Use the cheapest oil that is motorcycle approved (JASO) that has the Mo-co recommended viscosity.
Change the oil at the Mo-co recommended intervals.

No oil quality, or change interval, will benefit you.
A different story for the oil companies!

And at least there is a comprehensive product data sheet on this product and many of the leading oils. Read that.
The V, VI, TAN,TBN and knowing the quantities of P and Zn all important. There is a trend toward "low emission" oil, avoid those as they have only trace amounts of P and Zn, not good for a roller bearing motor with fast lift high load valvetrain.
API designation for a compliant motor oil for the HD Twin cam is CF, a diesel motor oil. The higher newer oils have less P and Zn so that is not desirable. Special "Vtwin" oils carry added Zn and P and are an excellent choice. I would not be surprised if HD oil will start if they have not already lowering the P and Zn in their oil to remain cat friendly
