665 NOT working in 660 cradle
« on: January 15, 2011, 06:53:51 PM »

I had a Zumo 665 before I purchased my CVO Ultra, which comes with the Harley version of the Zumo 660.  Well, I finally got around to pulling the fairing today to hook up the XM antenna so I can get my XM and weather to work.  I plugged in the aantenna and fired her up.  NOPE!  I got the message "UPGRADE XM TUNER" which I'm pretty sure means the cradle doesn't support XM.

Dammit

So, I have no idea what the NIM looks like or how if fits into the cabling, and it got dark on me before I could trace everything.  Would the NIM have anything to do with the antenna?  I can't see how, but thought I would ask.

Sounds like you have one of the early 660 cradles that aren't compatible (no XM feature) w/the 665. You will need to upgrade/change your cradle to the newer one that is compatible w/both 660/665.

Yeah, maybe.  It's a 2011 FLHTCUSE6, I figured it would have the updated cradle.  I think the Harley cradles must be different than the Garmin ones.  I know they look different.

You aren't the first to run into this..
Got the 665 and Bluetooth cell set installed.  No problems on the bluetooth, but I made a dumba** mistake on the 665.

Before installing the 665 I plugged the XM antenna directly into the GPS.  XM and XM weather worked great!  Since I already had a 660 cradle wired into my bike I saw no sense in swapping it out with the 665 cradle since they look exactly alike (MISTAKE #1)!  Installed the antenna on the back of cradle, ran the antenna cable into the fairing and put the fairing back on.  Took off on a test ride and no XM signal!  Did I plug the antenna into the USB port on the cradle harness?  Wasn't sure so I pulled the fairing back off and rechecked the connection.  It was good. Emailed Garmin and was told the 665 would not work in a 660 cradle.  Here's mistake #2.  I sold 103Thunder my 660 and of course I send him the 665 cradle!  Damn!  Anyway, Brian brought the cradle to Ribfest with him and I'll swap it out this weekend.  Should fix the problem!

Also, I don't like that big a** antenna mounted on the outside of the bike.  Would it work if I mount it under the front fairing?  I have been told that it will in the southern states but may have a problem in northern states since the XM satilites circle above the equator.  What do you think?

Since the above post was made it has been posted that Garmin has updated the cradles so that the newer ones will work on either the 660 or 665.

I know, I just figured a brand new 2011 would have the updated cradle.  I think blissjim said they consolidated to one cradle back in May.  Harley must still be getting rid of old stock.  I have the Garmin Zumo 665 cradle, but I don't think the way the cable is made it will fit through the hole in the inner fairing.

Got a rat tail file?
 :)

Waiting on the Kennedy Cell Set before pulling the fairing and installing the XM antenna.  Hope I have the newer cradle!

Don't know if the 665 cable is different from the 660 but I thought the same thing when I put the 660 on my '07 cuse - no way will it fit through that opening.  But after taking out the rubber grommet it fit through just fine - no problem at all.  Hope your's works out the same.  :2vrolijk_21:

Read my post. The very first picture I took, you can see the Garmin numbers on the back of the cradle. One is a 660, which doesn't work on a 665, and the other is the new Garmin cradle that works on the 665. Compare it to your numbers. The -25 on the right is the 665 cradle.

Well, I just ordered the road tech 665 cradle from Jenni.  Seems it will be easier than cutting and filing the inner.  I can use my Garmin cradle on the other bike.
