    • CVO1: 2011 CVO Road Glide Ultra - Rio Red
Paint scratches/blemishes
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:24:35 PM »

I've had a 2011 red CVO RG Ultra since October 2010 and have about 2500 miles on it. While cleaning it the other day I noticed that there are numerous noticeable scratches and blemishes in the paint right where my knees contact the gas tank. These seem to be coming from just normal contact that occurs while riding. I wear regular blue jeans with no buttons or snaps coming anywhere near the tank so this seems to be scratching the finish rather easily. With only 2500 miles on the bike now, by the time I have 20 or 30k miles I'm thinking it will be worn down to the bare metal!!
I've owned many different motorcycles over the past 40 years and have never had an issue like this that was caused under normal riding conditions.

Anyone else notice this on their bikes and addressed it with HD or their dealer? I really don't think the finish should be scratching that easily if there was enough clearcoat applied.

My 03RKC did the same thing. It is black. So far the SEUC has no scratchs or swirl marks.

Yes--the scuffs are hard to get away from, the rider courses teach folks to squeeze the tank with their knees.  I suppose that is correct but it is very tough to deal with the scuffs this type of riding produces upon the gas tanks.
I am probably not the best rider but I do practice "NOT" squeezing the gas tank with my knees as my preference to the scuffed tank ! Although I am not doing "the right thing", I have been riding for many years----with( non-marred) shiny gas tanks and no accidents as a result ! The many years of riding have put many, many miles on several bikes with no ill results from not squeezing that tank; only advantage being a well kept, good looking bike, and higher trade in values,if there is such a thing anymore ! Best of luck to you on finding a solution for your tank scuffs----I really can't recommend my style----I can only relate what has worked for me !............ ;)

I have the rio red one as well and I am noticing the marks in the paint. I think the color has a lot to do with how much the marks show however it does seem to scuff easier than any other bike I've owned. I've gone through almost a  bottle of scratch and swirl remover on this bike in 10k but on my other bikes I had used only 1 bottle in 120k.

It is a Harley product called Swirl & Scratch Treatment. Good luck.

Blaming the EPA for everything is just a tad simplistic.  And I don't think the soft paint is caused by the elimination of lead, or the reduction or elimination of some of the most volatile solvents, both of which might be "blamed" on the EPA I suppose.

Modern clearcoats tend to be urethane based, since that chemistry is more resistant to attack by things like air pollution, bird droppings, etc.  Unfortunately, while the urethanes tend to be more resistant to impact and chemical attack, they are somewhat softer than some of the earlier paints.  Add in problems caused by the application process, such as excessive film build (too much isn't good) and insufficient cure, and urethanes can develop severe swirl marks in short order.  Be thankful you can't run your bike through a car wash; the swirls after one such wash would make you cry.

As to why the CVO models seem to be worse than the standard models, they are painted in different facilities by different people using different processes.  That might have a great deal to do with the issue.  And btw, this isn't new, many CVO owners have been noticing the softer paint for years.

Get a good random orbit polishing tool, foam pads, and some 3M Finess-It polish.  You'll get a much better result with much less work versus trying to do it by hand.

Not on my bike!  Of course I've only got 24k miles on it. :nixweiss:

I think the trick is to keep your legs (body parts, clothing, etc.) off the paint completly. :2vrolijk_21:

I have a black 2004 bagger and the paint is in great shape. The key is to keep your pants away from touching the paint. I been riding bo-legged since it was new
