reliability of 103" engine
« on: April 07, 2006, 05:44:15 PM »

I purchased my '05 FLSTFSE in Nov 05.  At 22k miles I started having problems with hesitation, surging, backfiring, fouled plugs and was told the manifold was leaking.  Repairs were made and the problem recurred after another 8k miles.  I was not happy and was informed the manifold was leaking again.  Additional repairs were made and I was assured the problem was fixed.  I stated I wouldn't consider the problem fixed until at least 8k miles were ridden without recurrence of the problem.  Yep - 3k miles later (33k miles total on the bike so far) and the problem recurred.  The result is the entire top end of my engine will be rebuilt - under warranty.  My dealer has been fantastic.  Yet a call placed by them to Harley resulted in Harley saying the 103 is a performance engine and isn't meant to be ridden so much!  I bought my bike to ride, not to admire in my garage.  Anyone else experiencing a similar situation?

Thanks and ride on!

:(  I bought my 04 seeg for the same reason...to ride. My last bike RK, had 76k on it with NO problems. I hope yours is just a fluke (no, no, I don't mean that YOU should have a bad bike!  :-[ )
You ride a LOT! I average 10k a year: bike will be out of warranty in 2 months, but I got the extended warranty. whew.  Sometimes the threads in this forum make me need a  [smiley=drink.gif]

Some how I want to believe there is something that was lost in translation.  If not, I know we have ourselves a matter to be addressed.

All the Best towards your resolution.

Maybe you should put it in storage and it would never have motor problems for the MoCo to warranty...what dumb a$$ comment by the MoCo rep.

Take care,

Something dosen't add up here.
Let's see, we have a touring frame with removeable luggage, two up riding accomodations and a motor with decent power but average compression and that's "high performance"?
Holy cow, I bought a hot rod and didn't know it!
I also hope to God that there is a breakdown in communication here because I bought mine to Ride.  [smiley=jalapeno.gif]

I would ask why the factory is willing to sell you an ESP for a total of 7 years of warranty coverage on a bike this wanker ( I owe you a nickle Twolane) says won't hold up. We all know about the trouble with the cam chain tensionsers, (I got my covered on the ESP) Other than that, I haven't heard a specific longevity issue on the 103's I think, and this is just my opinion, that those of us who buy the CVO bikes tend to be on the anal side of maintenance. As such our rides are usually dialed in perfectly, never have even remotely dirty fluids in them, bad plugs, dirty air cleaners and a host of things that a lot of your average Joe Schmoe Harley owners subject their bikes to. Man this site is testament to what a bunch of OCD nutjobs we all are.If anything, if I worked on CVO bikes at a dealership and saw all this OCD chit I'd think just the opposite of what this wanker said. If you look at the 103 you can build from an 88"and look at ours, you'll see ours were built for longevity and not max performance. I am amazed no one's asked Dafixer what he could build for a motor using all Screamin Eagle parts. Sooooooooooo in conlusion I'd say that the bike in question here has some problems and if this is what this particular Stealer is saying, it's time to find a better place to get the bike worked on.

What he said.

Being nice and pleasant to deal with doesn't seem to be getting the job done.
