Friend killed in crash yesterday
« on: February 02, 2011, 04:42:40 PM »

So, so sad.  Bob was a long time friend of mine and just a great guy.  He had a heart as big as all outdoors.  For many years he has been a professional funeral escort - a very, very high risk occupation to be sure.  But some middle-aged lady just had to get into the shopping center and took advantage of a slight break in the funeral procession to turn left.  Bob was coming up fast in the right lane to get ahead of the procession to block the next intersection.  He never had a chance.  Ironically the funeral Bob was escorting was for an Navy veteran who was to be buried in the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.  Bob was a veteran and a founding member of Rolling Thunder Chapter TN V.

I never met Bob's late partner, Horne, but he owned Elvis' sportster (the one he is pictured with on The Enthusiast magazine in the 50s) for many years.  Before he died he left it to the Harley-Davidson museum.

Here is a blurb from a local TV station's website:

A motorcyclist escorting a funeral procession was killed Tuesday when he was hit by a car.
The 67-year-old Brighton, Tenn., man died on the scene. Bob Ward was the co-owner of Horne's Escort and Guard Inc.
Investigators say the funeral procession was heading west on Poplar Ave. near Byhalia Rd. when a vehicle traveling east tried to turn and hit Ward's motorcycle.
So far, no charges have been filed against the driver of the other vehicle.

Thanks Chip.  Yes he will surely be missed.  Just sad that we seem to be in such a hurry that we can't slow down even for a moment.  An eye witness said the driver of the car was more concerned about her damaged vehicle that about Bob.  Damn shame.

I'm very sorry for your loss!  It's f$%*ing ridiculous that no charges were filed considering the cage driver turned into a funeral procession and had an accident with someone going straight.  If people would just learn to wait 30 f$%*ing seconds instead of risking people's lives we all might make it through a week without hearing about things like this.

Wasn't going to mention that but I have to agree with Ernie!

No matter what charges are filed it doesn't change things. Very sorry this happened.

Needless to say it saddens me to read of this lost for all involved.  Bob appeared to have been a great American and one that contributed through his life.  Thank GOD and those like him.  Our society will miss those like him for sure.

All the Best to his family and friends
