09 SERG Tire replacement
« on: February 15, 2011, 12:28:39 PM »

I know that there have been several tire threads on the site, but couldn't find anything real recent.  I've had the front tire replaced under warranty, but now at 13k, front is cupping again and rear needs replaced.  I've read some threads on the Dunlop 408 & 407 and Avon Cobra.  Now that we've got some more miles on these bikes, what do you guys like for a replacement tires, front & rear?

Is it okay to use these tires, because these are radials (or at least the Cobra front is), and the stock Dunlops are bias ply front and back....are there any consequences to changing the type of tire this way?

Also, the Cobra rear has a 74 weight rating vs the Dunlop 80 (827 vs 992 lbs I believe). Should this be a concern?

I too had the factory front tire replaced under warranty, but with only 11K on the new one it's cupping.  REALLY!  Still plenty of wear left, but this is no good.  What kind of mileage are your guys getting out of the Avons?  If I can't solve the problem with Dunlops I might as well have stickies.  ???

I don't have enough miles on the new Avon's yet to address your question re: wear of these tires.  However, I went with the Avon's for exactly the same reason you are considering them.  I figured they couldn't wear (or cup) any faster than the stock tires, so I wanted to give them a try.  So far, I have no complaints, they are great riding tires.

You guys that had the tires replaced under warranty, were they replaced with the Dunlop d408F?  I am getting ready to replace my d407f that is on my 08 SER4, which MoCo will not cover. I was going to use the d408f but if it is having the same problem as the 407 I am going to something other than Dunlop.

My replacement, under warranty, was the 408.  Same problem.

I got over 30,000 miles on the 408F front tire. I had the 407F on my 2009 FLHX and had it replaced..  (Warrante)..  No problems with replacements for me.. I keep close eye on Tire Pressure..  I now have the American Elite on both wheels, feels good.. Black wall's only..

Did a TSB exist for the front tire issue?  I had what I thought was going to be a warranty replacement until the dealer handed me a $290 bill last weekend.  Said it didnt pass the criteria for a warranty replacement when they "measured" it.  The tire had 10,540 miles with quite a bit of tread left, it just looked and felt like a tractor tire.

With radial tires..................tire pressure monitoring is VERY IMPORTANT.
As a matter a fact, I found you should run at least 2/3 psi more with radials
to prevent cupping. Just my 2 cents.

service bulletin m-1258a I pulled into service handed the service writer a copy and said I was experienceing the problems indicated in the bulletin, New tire installed immediately, Dealer establishes criteria, he could have done your tire if he wanted to.

My guess dealer is collecting from rider and getting warrantee from the Motor Company.... :2vrolijk_21:
