could they both be right? the extra plug in the pan is supposed to be in the return passage as the hot oil comes out of the engine, the dip stick is sitting in a pool of oil not in direct flow path

Per H-D's service literature, normal oil temp is 230 degrees F. on the CVO 103.  If your gauge is reading significantly lower, and the outside temp is 70+, I would guess the gauge is off.  BTW, the oil cooler thermostat starts opening at 180, so you should see the oil temp rise fairly rapidly until 180, then rise more slowly to the 230 mark.

Naitram,

Actually, there is a baffle in the oil pan that directs the hot oil from the engine across the top of the pan to the rear, then down to the bottom of the pan.  The oil pan plug location is at the bottom front, which would be the coolest location.  I would expect to see a noticeable difference in readings between the return line from the engine, and the bottom front of the pan.

the "plug" i was reffering to is the upper plug where you can mount the sender not the lower drain plug

Both are at the bottom front - see photo, one labeled "crank", other labeled "mag".

Yep, I would think that the dipstick and the guage with the sender in the pan would be the same?

You'd think they'd at least be close.  Do you have a meat thermometer or something similar that goes up to 250-300 degrees?  If so, run the bike until it's hot, get the readings from the 2 guages, then insert the meat thermometer to see which guage (if any) to believe...

I installed my oil gauge kit last weekend but it hasn't stopped raining long enough to ride.

The pipe plug in the bottom front of the oil pan is there to fill the hole created when machining the oil pickup passage from the pan to the fitting for the hose to the oil pump inlet.

Jerry, as always, thanks for your explanation (s)..  Finally got to ride.  As does HD-dudes, there is about 20-25 degrees difference between the sender in the front of the pan for the gauge and at the rear of the pan for the LED dipstick.

What are the thoughts on putting the sender in supply line from the filter mount to the oil cooler?

This site might be large enough to be on HD corporate radar screen.
Someone might check to see how we the premium customers are getting along. I think they check this stuff.
You can bet on the fact that this and other sites like it get read on a regular basis and get taken seriously.

hd-dude,
I was wondering the same thing.  I had my bike up on the lift cleaning it this past weekend.  It doesn't look like it would be too bad to spice into the return oil like between the filter and the cooler.  Has anyone else attempted this yet?
