What are the thoughts on putting the sender in supply line from the filter mount to the oil cooler?

Jim,

Maybe we can try it on my bike...

Both.  Want to install the HD guage.  Next week for the 15K, guage, and prep for Cripple Creek?

I think it was Twolane that coined the name "rain gauge" for the air temp piece o' junk, but I found a great replacement for it when looking for a good oil gauge.

Only issue it isn't offered in chrome at the moment for the OCD boys.....

An update on the temp difference between the dipstick gauge and the dash gauge...during my dyno run yesterday I was periodically checking the oil temp and comparing the two. As time went on and the dash gauge was reading closer and closer to the dipstick gauge. By the end of the run(s)  the two gauges were both reading about 230 degrees which is normal operation temp. I guess it take a while for the oils at the bottom of the pan to get completely up to temp. The good news is that the gauge is actually fairly accurate.

Thanks for the update on the temperature's..  I almost wonder if my oil cooler has oil going thru it all the time as the highest my gauge has read is around 190 degrees and takes a while to get there.  The 11/32" socket I "lost" while installing my gauge hit me in the knee after hitting a rough section of road and after I figured out what had hit me, I turned around as was able to pick it up with no worse for wear.

Has anyone tried this now?

So I go into the dealer to get the 1k check done before we leave for Cripple Creek and decide I may as well install the oil temp gauge.

I go in prepared to explain how I want it done in the pan and almost before I can get it out, the svc mgr starts esplaining how they don't do the factory install but instead use a reducer and put it right next to the drain plug and hide all the wiring down the spine of the bike, etc. etc. etc.

Isn't it nice when you find a great shop?  I love it when a plan come together.

He did like the drain plug for dummies pic though, I had the thread with pic in my pocket so I could ask a couple questions before I figured out they already did the install that way.  Bellingham Harley in Bellingham Washington.

Has Bellingham built themselves a new place yet?  When we were there in '02, they were in a tiny place off on a side street.  Seemed like good people, though they were booked enough they couldn't do my service for me at the time.

Here is what I learned on my own (the hard way) before finding this thread:

1. If you are determined (and own a dremel tool), you can get the original chrome oil line cover to fit over the oil temp sensor.  Don't bother... it's not worth the time it takes to install the sensor adapter fitting in that tight space... but it can be done.

2. Installing the sensor in either of the oil cooler lines is problematic because oil doesn't flow through them all of the time.  The gauge will not function until the thermostat opens flow to the cooler.  In colder months, the thermostat may remain closed more than it is open (depending on the duration of your ride) and prevent oil flow to the sensor.

3. The best place for the sensor in this application is in the oil pan.

4.  Always use the search function to see what others have to say before venturing forth on your own.
