SERG / SESG front suspension height questions
« on: March 17, 2011, 09:23:21 AM »

I have the SERG, and am curious as to the front suspension fork hight.  I am under the impression or understanding it is one inch lower than the rest of the touring bikes on the front forks.  I know the shocks in the back are 12" on these bikes vice 13"  Are the fronts lower too?

Two people at Progressive says they are the same hight on all FLT and FLH bikes, one at progressive says they are one inch lower.

Of the three Harley dealers with in 70 miles of me, one says the same hight and two say one inch lower.

I really want / need to know so I can order the correct mono tube suspension part from progressive for my bike.  I do not want to change the front height, I want it to ride better but same height.

I checked but my service manual does not let you know for shocks or forks the height difference.

Thanks for the help.

I've been told by many same height.  Only the rear is one inch lower.

I measured a stock 09 Roadglide and it was the same as my 09 SERG as far as the front height went.

If you search Harley's accessory website and compare listings for the FLHX and the FLTR to those for the FLHXSE or FLTRSE, you will find that the front end lowering kit is only listed for the standard models, not for the SE models.  Does that mean that the SE models already have the lowered front end, or does that mean the Harley site is wrong and has been wrong for several years?  Don't know with 100% certainty.

This from the listing for the front end lowering kit:
-------------------------------------
Profile® Low Touring Front Lowering Kit

Place the rider's feet firmly on the ground. This kit utilizes components designed to provide a 1" decrease in ride height.

 54564-09

Fits '09-later Touring models (except FLHR, FLHRC, FLHP, FLHPE, FLTRSE3, FLHXSE/2 and Trike models). Must only be installed on vehicles equipped with Profile® Low Touring Shocks P/N 54635-09. Can be installed on FLHX and FLTRX models with Original Equipment rear shocks.

MSRP US $149.95

BTW, the front fork springs as listed in the parts manuals are not the same.  The '09 FLTR spring is P/N 46235-09.  The '09 FLTRSE spring is P/N 48787-09.

Dang.  My dealer is sure the SERG is the same hight as the regular Road glide, electraglide in the front.  So is the Manager I talked to at progressive.

My dealer just ordered the normal height mono tub cartridges for my bike.

I sure hope that is correct, I do not want the front higher than it is now.

I tried to get a definite answer to this question prior to installing the Mono Tubes in my SESG. Best guess was they are the same height but the different part numbers could not be explained.

I took some measurements, had the standard height Mono Tubes installed and remeasured. Height was increased 1/4 inch. FWIW.

I can live with 1/4 inch hight increase.

Talking again today at dealer, some swear the front is one inch lower on the SESG and SERG and other swear it is same hight as others.

Dealer has the standard hight mono tube ordered for my SERG.  I have the stock measurements and will take measurements when they are done.  I am thinking it really is stock hight.

How do you like the mono tubes?

I really like them. They have not bottomed out on me yet. I have them on my 08 SERK and 11 SESG. Well over 10000 miles on them with the SERK. You can hold your line in twisties better, absorb most rises and wallows but a pothole is still a pothole, avoid them. The 08 SERK w/mono tubes and Works shocks is the best riding scooter I've ever owned.

I have the Ricor Intiminators in the 02 SERK. The mono tubes work much better. IMO.

from what i recall it reads new for 2011 lowered chopped front fender.... if you lower the front end bumpy road wont agree. i had the harley kit on a 06 ultra(firm)..... and the progressive on a 99 road king i just swapped it back to stockwith se fork oil because one summer here in michigan with all these bumps in the road i needed a kidney belt.looked damn good slammed. i also had hd short shocks in the rear on both bikes . if the roads are smooth do it.

The stock height mono tubes were put in yesterday.  They are about 1/8 to 1/4 longer than the stock front end on the SERG, so I would say it was not lowered from the factory.

Wow, I have 180 miles now with the new mono tubes.  It was money well spent.  Very little dive when you hit the front brakes hard.  It is much firmer than stock, but I do not feel it is harsh.  I really like it so far.

I would bet that the increase in height is from nothing more than the new suspension not saging as much now.

Black Diamond and FLSTFI Dave,

Sorry for bringing back an old thread, but I have a question for either of you.

Did you guys install just one or both plastic preload spacers on each fork spring? I mention this because the instructions say "Spacer length can be DECREASED to lower the ride height and soften the ride, or INCREASED to raise the ride height and stiffen the ride. Adjust in 1/4” increments.

So if you both think that the finished height after install is about 1/4" higher, I'm wondering if I could just use one plastic spacer and maybe end up close to stock? Or do you think this would affect ride quality in any way.

BTW, I'm installing on my 2011 FLHXSE2.

Thanks for your help,
Mike

I recently installed the standard height on my 2011 SESG with both spacers. Like a dumb a$$ I didn't measure the stock height, but I am pretty confident my front end is lower. I feel like I am scraping more into the turns, and the bike appears lower to me. Great mod though, and super easy.
