Trying to bring this back to my original question. Why, if as Twolane says the 150 will grip longer but break loose all at once, do people want them ?  Is this a vanity thing ? Bigger is better from a looks standpoint. I just don't know what the fuss is all about on a bagger tire. I want a tire that holds the road in corners, manages not to hydroplane in the rain and stops reasonbly well. Seems to me that the 130 tire is the only size that does all this. I ran through a couple of sets of Metzlers, running the 140 on the rear and came back to a 130 Dunlop for the wide white look. IMO the 130 Dunlop performs better than the 140 Metzler. But, my biggest concern is with riding in the rain, since I don't get a lot of practice doing that here in Dago.

Here we go again - I'm sure I'm going to piss someone off, but here is my take on the whole "wide tire" thing: It is due to the indoctrination we've received from the MoCo.

Brian & Twolane,

:) I'm fully aware that I don't fit the mold of a typical Harley owner.

This is speaking only as an "arm chair quarterback" having never ridden a wide tire bike. But from what I've read/heard if they are left side drive then there can be some complications of bike wanting to pull to one side (because of motor/transmission/rear tire not being centered). Hence the right side drive was developed to get everything back in line, however with the wide rear tire there still will be more force required to get the bike to turn due to the fact that tire is so wide. Now if I were able to own two bikes I would love to have a rigid chopper w/a wide rear tire to do my "bar hopping" with. But as has been stated this would be for the "look cool" factor and definitely not for the "functionality" factor. I know that there are those out there that ride this style bike, and a few of them probably put more miles on them then some of us on our "touring" bikes. I think these riders are probably few and far between, and definitely don't have (at least yet) all the body aches and pains that I do. I might add that when I had my Fatboy I investigated the wide tire crave, and was told that they wear out quicker then stock size tire. Therefore it became a simply case of economics, pay more for something that will not last as long as something cheaper. For me that was a "no brainer".

Jerry  You and I and Twolane are on the same page. I'm trying to get one of the people who just has to have a 150 on their bike fess up to the real truth and that is as you said, They WANT it. That's all, just me being me looking for balloons to pop  You seem to be real smart about a lot of stuff. You make some great posts, so no need to diss yourself and say you don't fit the mold. 40 years ago when I started down this path (bikerdom) I loved it because there wasn't a mold. Please don't tell me they went and changed the rules on me.I can't take that.

Back in my racing days we used to go the way of trying to use the narrowest tire we possibly could without sacrificing traction.
