Allot of good points here.  I don't think people came on here just to bitch, but rather give their opinion where things stand with them.  I for one have had problems with both H.D.s I've owned and it's not the point that it broke, because there are a number of products that do, but how warranty and the issues resolving the breaks are handled.  H.D. seems relentless in telling people NO.  All it takes is 1 time and some will never be back.  I for one have been very dissapointed with the way they stand behind their product.  I don't like to be told no when I just paid nearly $30,000 for a bike that breaks or is scattered with defects and H.D. customer service says we're not gonna fix it.  Maybe I've been spoiled owning Toyota's over the years, but I can tell you more times than not they will fix anything without a hassle.  Ever had that good of luck with GM?  I sure haven't and that is why I no longer buy their vehicles.  This company cannot go on opertaing the way they do with customers.  I've talked with more owners that have had problems then those without.  The younger generation like myself (30-40's) have expectations for their hard earned money and have gotten used to other companies who care about repeat business, care what their customers think of them and DO THE RIGHT THING...  I honestly believe that H.D. could care less if you or I buy another bike, and for that I will gladly spend my money elsewhere.

And another thing...  I don't think I should have to spend $3000-$4000 to make a 103" put out 103 hp & tq.  Especially when the competition does it for less money.  Their is nothin worse than having a Victory drive by me with a 92"!  Sorry to rant, but something needs to change IMO.

I think this is at the crux of a lot of the position that HD takes with it's customers.

MOCO, Willie, and the boys seriously need to take a real close look at Polaris Industries in their rear view mirrors and take note of the following they are beginning to generate.

Saw my first Victory on the road the other night. I've seen 'em in parking lots, and showrooms. But to truly appreciate the bike, you gotta see it rolling, and hear it. They are incredibly nice bikes. The owner loves it. And I'd absolutely consider one of those over a Big Dog, AI, or most of the other American companies.
Did I mention they come from the factory looking as nice as our CVOS for cheaper $$$?
Reliability seems good as well.

I think alot of valid points are being made on both sides. For a long time all I ever wanted was a Harley Davidson, I rode some Jap bikes while I could not afford to own my dream machine which was always a H-D. When I was finally in the position to own one I forked over the cash and rode off very happy with my FLHSTCI..........then I took a trip from Cleveland to Boston on it. Unmodifieds other than a race tuner and some pipes, it was the least powerful of any bike I owned previously. I had a hard time making it up some mountain roads. With the throttle nailed I could get up to 65 mph......only if I downshifted to 4th as 5th would slow me down to about 45mph. I was extremely dissapointed in my Raven and knew it was gonna cost me some more big money to bring up the power to rideable.....mind you not a rocket ship just rideable. I made the decision to take a3 thousand dollar hit on selling it to buy a different bike. Still intent on owning an H-D I baught my CVO. I am happy with it and love it for what it is.  First problem I ever really had was the fender......six months later H-D got around to getting me my fender. SO I am happy again. The next thing that happens is I notice some chrome peeling off my mirrors. I am told by the fine folks who handle warranty claims that the peeling chrome is due to " Elemental Damage" there is  not a problem with the chrome , you just let it get wet..........UMM sure ok, so noone told me the bike could not get wet......thats retarded. Lots of folks know what I went through with getting the bike frame replaced and all was good in that area....they took care of me very well. Until the second time I rode it since it got home from the shop the clutch slipped and burnt up by the time I got it home. Turns out that this had nothing to do with the fact they just basically rebuilt my bike on the new frame..............but its a WEAR item. IN 18 years of motorcycling I burnt out two clutches in my life..........this being the second. The first one was on an old Suzuki with 40 thousand miles on it and me being stupid doing a burn out. My bike had just over 3 thousand miles on it when the CVO clutch gave way.which buy the way I had no problems with before new frame. So they soaked me for another 610 dollars. I am over all this and I am very happy with my cruiser.

So this takes us up to date. The signifigant other and I decide we would like to have a touring bike for those longer trips. SO the first place we head to is good old H-D naturally. First dealership we go to , which we have spent thousands of dollars at ...noone seems to want to sell a bike. Cannot even flag down a salesman. When I do and ask how much it runs for the one on the floor we are interested in he tells me " probably more than you can afford"...........ok he must have no idea that the bike outside in the lot I drove up on is about 10 grand more than this one and it's paid for............so ok. That still was not why I did not buy the Ultra. Looking at that 88incher pushing out 65 ponies at best I thought back on that trip on the heritage...........so now I realize if I buy an HD touring bike its gonna have to be a CVO or at least have as much money in it as a CVO to pull my fat ass around.

I decide I am going to look at it with an open mind and do some research. I looked at the Venture ...........hated it.it looked as cheap as it was. I looked at the BMW........nice bike , lots of features but just felt wierd to sit on...no other explanation I can give would explain it any better.........it was just ODD ergonomically speaking.

One day we are bored and with no place to ride to I say lets go look at the Goldwing. WE pull into Honda......greeted by everyone in the place as soon as we walk in the door. They did not attack us like salesmen they were just very friendly, even complimented me on my Harley. I walk over to one of these Hondas and say to myself ......man thats alot of plastic not really digging it at all. Then I start asking about what it has to offer with one of the managers there. He shows me the 06 Goldwing and then talks about the 1800cc six  in it pumping 120 ponies of water cooled dependable power. OK thats great I think. Then he shows me the 6 disk changer, the CB, the adjustable headlight, the adjustable preload ( controlled by a button not a spanner wrench) the heated grips, the heated seat, the foglights, etc etc etc. so I sit down and start talking price........well he asks what my budget is, and I let him know I am not prepared to buy a Wing just curious.he pulls out a left over 05 with all the chit I want and its 5 grand less than the same 06 I am looking at, I see no difference between bikes other than color and the one he shows me has a spoiler on the rear deck. He tells me the price and I almost fall out.......16,900 out the door, I say knock a grand off and we have a deal...........I wrote a check and own it today. I was upset with myself all night long not believing I baught a Honda. I mean even all my clothes say HD on them, this computer room is covered with HD stuff, throws, clocks lights models etc........The next day they deliver my new Wing at my job..........been smiling since.  Now I have a bike to go park with others and enjoy the culture with and another one that rides MUCH better and has more power for less than half the price. DO I love my HD any less..............hell no! DO I ride it less..........ABSOLUTELY! If HD had treated me like one of their best customers, wich I believe I am having baught 4 of them in 2005.they probably would have earned yet another bike sale...........but due to how I have been treated by them........while I will not ever be without an HD in my garage, I now have a Honda too and I never thought I would see that day! As a salesman in the auto industry I even applied for a job selling HDs they turned me down for some reason, well I have a job now selling Yamaha , Suzuki, and Kawasaki. Nice bikes, great prices, more power.

The point of my rant is to say that no matter how loyal a customer is you can only chit on them for so long before they get wise. As far as the term RUB goes there are alot of loyalist who will only own an OLDER Hd and they think anyone who owns a new one is a rub with more money than sense, so its all a matter of prospective. WE like to defend our Harley by talking about chit like resale value. Two things wrong here, number one I dont buy motorcyles planning to sell them, I buy them planning to ride them til there is no more riding left in it. And number two the resale value thing had weight in the past..........If I could get 20 grand for my CVO that sold for 28 one year ago I would be doing OK........in fact before purchasing the wing another dealer offered me 14,500 for trade on a better than new CVO when looking at the Ultra.........I almost punched him in the mouth. They cant even sell the new 06s that they have overflowing the dealerships no demand for my 05. The reason we ended up buying 4 bikes is the first two were just the wrong bikes for us......didnt spend the 200 bucks for a day test ride. Yamaha will let you ride their flagship Stratoliner with nothing more than a copy of your license and show them a motorcycle endorsement. BTW the Stratoliner and the Roadliner are about half the cost of a CVO and put out way more power and is the smoothest riding cruiser I have ever ridden. People are getting tired of it and I know it is not just me. I have sold many a Jap cruiser to alot fo folks wearing HD shirts, even took a few in on trade. In fact 80 percent of cruisers I have sold have been sold to people who USED to ride HDs. Yeah the MOCO better wake up! There are bikers whos goal is to look cool and they are some of my best friends and their bikes do indeed look cool. Then there are RIDERS who enjoy riding more than posing........there are more of these types and the HD is not the best choice when it comes to RIDING.........thats just a plain fact.

BTW there is a brand new Kawasaki VN2000, thats a 2000cc water coooled bike putting down 141 lbs of rear wheel torque for those of you not in the know on my showroom floor right now at this minute for 10 grand plus tax.

Interesting story, Scott.  As I read this, I feel like I'm seeing an example of the transition customer.  One who wants a HD, but is forced (ironically by HD themselves) to recognize the undeniable value of the competition.  I can see this happening more among the current generation of Harley owners.  Riders who have a HD as a favorite motorcycle, but own a metric to actually ride.  Kind of like having a classic car in the garage, but doing all your driving/traveling in a Toyota.  I've given it a lot of thought, myself.  It would be really nice to have a bike with power, reliability and a price that allowed me to relax leaving it at a motel overnight.  I love the look, feel and "it" factor of Harley, but I wonder if the next generation, accustomed to bulletproof metric transportation at a good price, will still be willing to pay 1.5 times the price and get a product that they'll have to fiddle with.  This is why I think the clock is ticking on HD.  AND their dealers.  Dealer attitudes are truly amazing.

Exactly red. Its nice to have a kick ass muscle car from the 60s and a Lexus if you have the means. But we all cannot deny that if you have both cars to choose from to go across country your not going to leave the lexus at home!

Even as far as muscle cars/bikes go. The Yamaha Vmax has not changed in about 10 years and it will still kick the chit out of any stock Harley CVO or not, also for about 10 grand. The V-rod ALMOST has it beat........but still for much more money.

Ever seen a Suzuki m109 or even a Yamaha warrior? Saying HD is the best bike is like saying Bush is the best Pres, your either blind and dont want to see the truth or just simply stupid. I love my HD for its nostalgic value and I do appreciate it as a piece of art and it is reminiscent of a lost error in motorcycling, unfortunately that is also the same reason it has not been improved very much. At least it dont blow oil like they used to............there have been some improvements but not as many as there should be for the price tag they command. Motto Guzzi made more powerful motorcycles than a stock HD as far back as the late 50s.
