Labor Rate
« on: March 30, 2011, 10:54:52 PM »

My dealer is charging $800.00 for just the labor to change out my 09 Serg bars. Don't have the name of the bars I'm putting on with me now, but they are similar to Paul Yaffee Monkey bars. 17"X1.25  Is this price to high? It sure seems high. Thank's in advance.

Are you kidding??!! Not sure what their labour rate is but if its what it is around here, $75 hr, thats about 10 hrs labor.

Sounds like thats your dealers way of saying, we dont want to do this job.

Find a good independant shop that will do the job for maybe half that.

Here in germany you have to pay 1k Euro for changing the bar ( without the bar) - so don`t complain .  8)

All I know is when I changed to 12" mini z's on my rocker it took alot! I am very mechanically inclined but it's a chore! Let's see remove and istall clutch line which also constitutes bleeding the clutch on your bike, remove and install brake lines which includes bleeding, extend all wires which is probably in the neighborhood of 25 plus wires on your bike (time depends on if they can use extensions or have to splice each one), transfer grips and controls,  of course remove and re-install fairing, remove and re-install gas tank (which includes draining and re-filling), removing and installing new bars, and I'm sure a few other things i'm not familiar with. That being said I am not trying to anger or offend anyone I'm just stating there is quit a bit to the job! I would definately check independent shops. Probably $20 an hour cheaper plus they will probably tell you how many hours so you can compare to the stealer.

I just had my own bars changed out on my scoot. I had a independant shop do mine. He installed heat demons (which I already purchased). He also installed my new SE compensator (which I already purchased). . The cables remained the same (brake & clutch) . He accidently knocked a wire off the amplifier putting the front fairing back on, he repaired that. But, my bill was only $ 675.00. Your stealer might have quoted you new cables, who knows. I agree with others that say find a independant shop. ..........................................................Fuzz

I believe I would ask for a detailed breakdown of exactly what they plan to do for $800, then find a good indy who will most likely do it for hundreds less.  I can't think of any reason for a professional mechanic to need 10 hours to change bars.  Even if wires need to be extended, there are companies who sell plug-in solutions.

I often get the feeling that some shops look at a CVO and figure anybody who would sink that much money in a bike must have really deep pockets and not much sense, so they try for a home run when quoting work.  Either that, or the "new" technology like throttle by wire and hydraulic clutches intimidates them so they pad the bill to cover their expected screwups.

This is one those those situations where if you never swapped out your bars, extended all the wires and internal wiring its hard to understand why it costs so much. This job flat out sucks, trust me I did it. Bought the extensions and had them rip apart halfway through the bend in the yaffe monkey bars. You have to stagger your cuts on the wires, soldr and heat shrink them. Otherwise you have a big ball and its next to impossible. A good trick is to use some plumbers lube to help slide it through.

Thank's... The guy at Heat Demom told me my 1.25 bars would have to be honed out to a true 7/8 because when they are compress to 1" at the handle it is to small to fit the Heat Demonsand the fly by wire. Any input would be appreciated.

Several of us have installed these in the handlebars. HD Brad was the first that I saw to do this. If you have access to a drill press and a good vise, it's not hard to do. I beleive HD Brad drilled his by hand. However a new 7/8 drill bit and lots of oil. Make sure you go at least drill 6 1/4 " inside the right side of your bars. Left side does not have to be drilled. I have fabbed some bars of my own design and documented on this site.On the first page of the thread there's a good pic of the drill press and SE Dave drilling out the template bars that I fabbed up. Here's the link. http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=52587.0;all. Check it out. Let me tell ya , the Heat Demons are the chit!!!!! The extra work to be done to the bars is well worth it. My next endevor is to modify my seat a litte more or have a new seat custom made but with the HEATED option.  ........................................Fuzz

x2 it was a chore did the OEM 12's. Before I tackled it I got two quotes that were around 1000.00 with the bars and lines.
