SE Wobble, Windshield, Tour-Pak, Seat, Fuel Button
« on: April 25, 2006, 10:50:50 PM »

Hi Everyone,

Hope all is well and you're ridin like hell.
I have a 2000 UC (60,000 miles) and now a 2006 SE UC (2500 miles).

WOBBLE:
That old bike is great...can do 80 mph for miles with no hands.
I don't recommend this, but I mention it for comparison to the new bike.
The new bike at 80 mph feels like it wants to fall over.
Even worse if leaning at 80.
Don't know what it is, but from day 1, it had this symptom.
The faster you go, the worse it is.
Front end to light? Neck Bearing loose? Rear suspension?
Front to Rear alignment? Wheel balancing? Who knows?
I don't know and neither does the Dealer.
*** Any help? ***

WINDSHIELD:
Replaced the smoked shorty with a King and 3 pouches.
Nice! It did not change the wobble.

TOUR-PAK:
The new bike's tour-pak is real nice, but not practical for touring.
Replaced it with a new black King-Pak, with luggage rack and lighted spoiler.
Thinking of painting it to match or covering it in leather.
Moved it back, but still need more room.
Thinking Kuriakin or the guy from Illinois.
Are the wires gonna be long enough?
Don't think it moving it back should affect the wobble.
*** Any help? ***

SEAT:
Heated seat was also nice, but not practical for touring.
Replaced it with the Road-Zep.
Thing came with an instuction book.
Imagine that...instructions for using a seat.
It is way different.
Raised me up an inch when not inflated, 2 inches when inflated.
Do not inflate while sitting on it...that's what it says not to do!
Very comfy. Wide.
Don't think it affected the wobble.

FUEL BUTTON:
Popped off and came apart on my first 600 mile ride.
Almost had a little spring and screw fall into the tank.
Still ain't working. Not a priority right now.

But I really gotta do something about that wobble.

Hope to hear something usefull from cyberspace.

Thanks!

Really interesting post [smiley=nixweiss.gif] because I have the same concern.  I was at my HD Dealer today picking up my bike after the 1600km serviice and saw something that scared the sh*%$& out of me!  There in their shop was a 2006 FLHTCUSE (Watermelon) with 600km on it.  The bike was destroyed [smiley=nervous.gif].  I asked the mechanic what had happened and the guy said the owner got a really bad wobble at 70 miles/hour and had to lay the bike down.  This scared the crap out of me.  I then took my bike up to 80 to see if I would have the same wobble and it definetly felt very tentative at that speed.  I am getting ready for a long highway ride to Reno and I am a little nervous.  Any suggestions on how to reduce this wobble would be appreciated.

Hey Canuck,

The best advice I can offer: do not go 80 or above.

There seem to be other owners with the same concerns,
so when I find the cure I will let everyone know.

BTW, on that 600 mile trip, at certain times, I just could not hold back.

Had it up to 110 and it was just to scary to go any higher.

Thing was jumpin all over the lane.

So we keep it at 65-70 mph.

I GOT 38 - 43 MPG.

I'll try to scan and post the receipts to prove it!

Stay tuned and have a nice safe ride!

A few other riders on other threads have written about vast improvements and stability with tire changes.  Drebbin and FR8TRN both have mentioned it.  Wonder if they had the high speed wooble before the tire changes and how they're running now?
I've got years of autobahn ahead of me, topping out at 80 only keeps me ahead of the 10spds and joggers...

I had it with mine, most of it went away when I changed the rear tire at 8000 miles (stayed with Lops), then I added the Ride-Str8 and it's completely gone now.  Never an issue on my '04 Ultra, but this one just didn't seem as stable.

Don't let that scare you, somebody was feeding you a line of BS.  He may have wrecked it at 70mph, and it may have been because of a wobble, but there is no way in hell he "had to lay it down", for one, he couldn't, take your bike up to 70mph and TRY to throw it on it's side, you can't.  Slowing down eliminates the problem, and I don't mean slowing down on the side of the bike....  Mine was pretty bad, enough to unnerve me and that don't happen easily.  My '04 would buck in the corners like a mule (straight line it was great, corners it sucked), I always found either slacking off on the throttle just a touch or pulling it in a bit more of it would settle things down and I about ground thru a set of floorboard mounts on that bike.

Hey FR8TRN,
Thanks for the words of support/advice.  I am curious, what is Lops?  What brand of tire did you change to?  I have heard good things about the Avon Venom.  Any experience?  I have the RideStr8 in a box in my garage.  I was going to wait and have the Freedom guy's install it in Reno but now I am thinking of doing it myself.  Was it difficult to install?

Lops=Dunlops, the ones that come on the bike.  I stayed with them to match the front tire that didn't get changed.  Next time around I'll go to Metzlers, had em on my '04 and loved em.  All I know about Avon's is that I've had 2 friends with them on other bikes (vulcan and wing), they came apart on em going down the road, I was riding with one of them when it happened, so I had no problem believing the other guy when he told me about his.  The Ride-Str8 is easy to install, you might have to loosen the exhaust to get the plate in there, specially with stock exhaust.

My bike has the same handleing issue. Not what I'd call a wobble, although if you hit a bump or something at high speed it feels like it could go into one. Mine seems at it's worst when it's windy. It takes a lot of effort to keep the bike in a straight line, kinda like it's aerodynamics are screwed or something. Normally on a windy day, you have to compensate for the wind from the left or right, that's part of motorcycling, but this one gets jerked left, then right, back and forth. Like others have stated, my 03 E-G was stable as a rock to 110, and never felt as unstable in the wind as the CUSE. I did have the neck bearing checked at the 1K mark, as well as alignment and such. The neck bearings were too tight. It did seem to help, but mostly I think I'm starting to get used to how this bike feels. Biggest issue to me now besides the obvious safety issue is how much more tiring it is to ride this bike. My neck and shoulders are hurting as they never have before. Haven't taken the lowers off yet, but I had them on my other bike too. Something is different for sure.

I suspect that the cause of many of the instability problems may be carrying around the steamer trunk bolted to the back end in obscene defiance of the CG.... ::)

[smiley=confused5.gif]  Same problem noted here.  It starts at around 70 when headed into the wind.  Anyone change to a standard windshield? I was wondering if that was the problem.

I took delivery of my bike two weeks ago and rode with the stock windscreen for the first 250 miles.  I still have an 04 Ultra that does not have a wobble issue so I have been looking for any way to stabilize my cuse.  I changed the windscreen to a stock windshield and the bike still feels unstable.  I am concerned enough to have dealer check at 1000 mile checkup.

I have a friend that is a lawyer that has dealt with high speed wobble fatalities and he has had experts align several bikes using a laser setup.  He was surprised at how many new bikes were delivered out of alignment at varying degrees.  We both ride ultras and his first comment to me when he heard I had ordered a Cuse was to be careful because the manufacturer was using the same frame design to house the larger engine and there might be a stability problem.  I would like to know how many Cuse owners have noticable handling instability compared to other Ultras they may own or have owned.  I will have my bike in to be checked within a couple of weeks and if the problem persists I will make some calls to see what it will take to have some of the experts look at the bike.

Im good till I get close to 90....then I feel a slight wobble, not a good feeling. I thought it was just me. Ill have to get mine checked out too. Im going on run this wekend, so Ill see how it does 2up. I also have changed out to an 8" clearview shield, it didnt change the wobble at 85+ though.

At just above 80 (like 82) it starts to feel "lighter", a little more work to control, harder to hold a line and the flat rode feels like I'm running in a rut....a shakey rut. But the stereo is cool. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
