Air kit - Which One???
« on: April 28, 2006, 07:12:15 PM »

There is the SE air kit from Harley, the Big Sucker from Arlen Ness and now the RK-3909 from K&N.  Aside from the fitment issues, which is the best?  And why?

I would also like to know how much difference there is in going with one of these kit versus installing a K&N replacement filter for the stock filter. I can see if you are after absolute maximum hp and torque that one of the kits may be the answer.  But for those of us who just want a good sounding and good ruuning bike why not just repalce the stock filter with the K&N replacement and doing anyone of the various adjustments to the ECU (i.e. PowerCommander, Re-map, SERT, Fuelpak).

I would like pipes to make my SEUC sound like I want and tuned to run smooth through all the rpm ranges.  Horsepower and torque are secondary.  I know everyone has different wants and desires, but I'm just trying to figure out what is the best way for me to go.

I'm sure there are others like me with some of the same questions trying to decide what is right for them.  Appriciate any input you all may have.

Hi DakotaZeb,
I can't speak for everyone but most folks who change the air cleaner as a kit are doing it to change out the filter backing plate not just the filter itself. You get some increase in airflow with a less restrictive filter but the major gains in air intake come when you have a more open backing plate. But opening up the back can allow for oil blowby that would normally be trapped in the stock setup to drip out and spray you and the right side of the bike. A well designed backing plate such as the Big Sucker and others will help prevent that from happening.
Intake sound is dampened by the relatively enclosed stock system I doubt you would see much increase by changing just the filter.

As stated by DakotaZeb above, I too am not interested in increased HP and Tq at this time.  This bike has plenty of both to meet my needs.  I would like to bling up my backing plate and improve the sound a bit as well.  And the improved filter is also appealing.  But I like the current A/C cover.

Does the BIG Sucker and the SE kit use the carry over cover?  I do understand that the SE has some fit issues to deal with, but they sound minor.

The SE kit also uses a paper filter now, not a K@N type, which I prefer. I have the Dougherty PowerPacc and really like it. You can call them and talk to Tim the owner for more info. You do have to a gasket on the inside of the stock cover to get a tight fit or Tim sells a round cover.

I just installed a Doherty Machine Power Pacc and am very pleased with the quality and fit on my CUSE.  I think it is worthwile to visit their website to read the magazine reviews on the performance gains of their unit with the built in velocity stack.

I ran the HD-1499 (direct replacement) on mine for a while with no changes to the ECM, ran great.....thats an option if you don't wanna do alot to it, but if your gonna change the mapping and go with pipes your gonna want an open setup (open backplate) so the engine can breath better.
