Hydra Clutch
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:12:04 AM »

My SESG has 50 miles on it and my hydraulic clutch is leaking out of the piston it's coming out of bottom every time you use it.  Just wondering if anyone else has had any problems like this.

Where is the leak, at the master cylinder or down at the transmission cover?  Question number two, have you had your ace dealership pick it up to fix it yet?  This is the sort of stuff they supposedly get paid all that money to check during "dealer prep", so you won't have this sort of problem at 50 miles.

If any of that fluid has gotten on your paint, be aware that it will damage the paint if it isn't removed and thoroughly flushed immediately.

My last two CVO bikes both leaked from the cover screws not being tight enough from the factory.

It does not matter what or where the problem is. Take it back to the place where you paid $35 000.00 and tell them to fix it. They should be ashamed and happy to kiss you and the bike in the tail pipe. :huepfenlol2: The SOB was probably leaking in the crate. >:(

Now now Jerry get a reality check, there will be no refund. A good smart ass dealer will only claim to be continuing the "prep" service and now that the bike is back they will complete it. ;) :D

And what about 6 months from now when paint starts peeling away where the hydraulic fluid got on it ? Which brings me to another question. For years we ran regular Dot 3 flluid. Then we went to Dot 5 Silicone and it was super because it wouldn't eat up your paint. Now if memory serves we're supposed to be running Dot 4 which is non silicone. I am not real up on this issue so if I'm talkin out my ass here fine, jump me for it, but after you've had your fun please explain where we're at with recommended hydraulic fluid (s)

For a brief period DOT5 was the fluid of choice Brian.  But the stuff is such a pain in the ass to bleed and requires such delicate handling to avoid some of the air entrainment problems that HD went away from it.  I like the idea of the stuff.  But just the idea.  It's too much of a pain in the ass to work with.  The spec now is DOT4.  Good synthetic DOT4 fluids with boiling points almost as high as DOT5 can be had at a local parts store pretty cheap.

Yeah, what Don said.  I remember changing bikes over to DOT 5 back in the day, based on stories of huge advantages in the enthusiast mags, only to find that getting the system properly bled was one huge PITA.  If you were racing, or doing a lot of mountain riding, the PITA was worth it.  Otherwise, it was just a PITA.

I think what really killed DOT 5 was the ABS systems.

BTW Brian, the paint damage due to the leak won't be covered if the customer doesn't get this documented at this time.  The crooks in Milwaukee shouldn't be trusted any further than a 100 year old geezer can pee.  That's why I didn't recommend he just haul out a screwdriver and wrench and tighten stuff himself.

Now see there ? Every once in awhile we post some credible information along with the daily dose of friendly BS.

Thanks Don as I did not know that Dot 4 was synthetic. HOWEVER, I have a hard time believing the MoCo made a change simply because the issue caused the consumer headaches (hard to bleed) Must have been something else driving the decision.

And Jerry, your point is why I mentioned the paint peeling issue. Thanks for the reinforcement !

My bike is in the shop for the 3rd time because the clutch is losing pressure somewhere?  I hope it's not that obvious, but I'm not picking it up this time unitl they tell me that they found the leak, or they replace every fricking component of this stupid Hydrallic clutch.  What was wrong with the fricking cable system, it worked fine for decades?

Not all DOT4 is synthetic.  But good synthetics are readily available.  HD went away from DOT5 because it can't be used with ABS.  And probably a little because it's such a pain to work with.

Cables break and require lubrication and adjustment as the friction plates wear.

The idea was the hydraulic would be fail safe, self adjusting, no cable to break etc etc .

From reading this thread I'd say the truth is - - guess not !

For what it's worth, I did not install a hydraulic clutch in my faux 07 SERG

I figured I'd go with the stock ball and ramp cable set-up until it became an issue.

I did install a SE clutch pak have had no issues other than occasionaly cable lube and adjustment
