Advice needed on potential purchase of '07 Road King CVO
« on: April 19, 2011, 12:30:49 PM »

 :nixweiss:
I am thinking of buying a CVO Road King (07), but know of no one who has one, or what to look for for issues/problems...I don't know if they are notorious for certain issues.  I have read that they can have overheating problems (this concerns me, as I live in the Los Angeles area and I have to contend with traffic issues), and that there was some recall/warranty work back in '08/'09.  How do I find out if the warranty work was completed?  How do I know if that "fix" actually took care of the problem?
Is this a good bike?  Reliable?  As awesome as it seems?  I love the Road King ride, and figure that the CVO gives me more bang for my buck.  I'm not a "hard rider", in fact, I'm usually the conservative one in the group, so I won't be abusing the bike...but I do like to have that oomph available to me if I need it.
Thanks so much for any and all advice you can give me!!

Also, what is the seat height on this thing?  I haven't been able to nail that down...Is lowering the bike (and/or the seat) an option?
Thanks SO MUCH!

The 07's had issues with head gaskets leaking oil.  Look at the rear cylinder just below the exhaust pipe.  You will see seepage there if there's an issue.  I've had mine done either 3 or 4 times so far.  The last one seems to be holding, but I haven't really looked alot either.  On mine, it's more of a cosmetic issue than performance.  There's no cylinder pressure leakage, only oil from a return port.  I can't say the 110 is any hotter than the 96" Ultra I rode for 10 days on a fly-n-ride.  It's an aircooled engine and you're sitting right on top of it.  If the price is right for you, I wouldn't be afraid of it.

The '08s seem to be out of my price range.  I wish I could get one...
Thanks for the tip on checking for seepage!  I will certainly do that!  :)
Anything else I should look for?

Other than the usual stuff to look at, I can't think of anything that is specific to an 07.  There were radio issues, but you won't have that, some CUSE's had some paint issues, but I can't specifically remember any RK's being spoken about.

I'm going to go look at one tomorrow that's 17K and has 13K miles.  Brand new brakes and a rear tire...says he has the maintenance records...
Where are you located?

I think we are in a "buyers" market right now. It might take some looking but you should be able to buy quite a bit lower than most "asking" prices. I started a post on the differences between the 07 and 08 CVO Road Kings you might want to check that out. The key point to me was 08 comes with ABS brakes which I feel is worth the price difference. The extra gallon of fuel for the 08 doesn't hurt either. You should check www.chopperexchange.com there are quite a few CVO Road Kings listed there and one may be close to where you live.

Thanks for the link--I'll check it out!  And I'm willing to travel or have a good bike shipped...so distance isn't a huge factor...if the price is right ;)

Any dealer can verify completion of recall/warranty by running the VIN number for service history. Someone knows the seat height. There are several kits on the market to lower Road Kings. I would change the seat first if need be. I had a 99 Road King Classic that was lowered when I bought it and I "HATED" it that way, always dragging on crap, real PITA.

Seat height is 27.5 inches. For all the reasons mentioned above I would try to get an 08 model. In my personal opinion the 08's cosmetically were much nicer.
Maybe i'm biased

Wow, that's gorgeous!
I wish I could go that high, but I just can't...I like the -08 better, too, for all the reasons you list...but it's just out of my pricerange.   The 17.500 is freaking me out LOL
I have never bought a motorcycle for more than 5K and dolled it up myself.  I'm not one for big purchases without huge losses of sleep, either LOL
I know you'll sell it--it's amazing!  I love everything about it!

Consider this, combine the cost of all the extras/custom parts you get with a CVO. If you try to build one, you'll spend way more than $17,500.00............ that alone justified my purchase!
