Has anyone tried this?
« on: June 06, 2011, 06:18:19 PM »

With the inventory of used bikes being so high and the prices so low, has anyone just bought a bike where they wanted to travel?

it seems that you could buy a bike run it a few weeks and sell it for about the rental cost and would have a better ride.

I know this may sound crazy, but this would give me a reason to say...........go to CA.

So are you saying, go to California, buy a bike, ride it for week, then sell it?

I was more thinking of flying out , buy a bike

ride it 3 weeks and ride it home,

then sell it,

only if I did not fall in love with it.

would make a good story and a good ride home.........

Your fantasy worked out in reality should be fun except for the "sell" part.  Back in the early to mid 90's when (supply versus demand) was the other way around,  your quest would have been very easy to do.

Now with both new and used inventorys in a stagnant economy and high un-employment and tougher rules for getting credit, etc.   You need to understand you will STILL HAVE the bike after your dream trip............cause unless you just wanna discount the asking price big time,  noone is likely to rush right over to your place and buy it. :drink:

Sounds like a great plan... But make sure you purchase a real nice CVO, just in case you are forced to keep it due to market values.

That way you can justify it with the wife!  :2vrolijk_21:

the only real way to know is go! buy the bike and ride it home and sell it. you have lost more on the deprecation of the cvo you currently own.

That 'temporary' license tag you're gonna  be running during the trip is possibly gonna cause you to be stopped more than you want and have to do some 'splaining' and what if the sight un-seen purchase turns out to have 'issues' after you have already flown cross-country...then what?  I could work out, but a lot of stars would have to line up just right.  spyder

Yes,

This could only work if I could a get CVO tour bike used at a good price.

There is no shortage of bikes with very low mileage.

some more homework is needed on my part.

a little risky (part of the fun/adventure)

something like this..............

I thought about this when I rented an old beat up boat for a week for $1,200.

With a bike, even if you broke even on the sales price, the sales tax, ins, registration etc would cost you more than shipping your bike one way.

I wanna say Jorge shipped his bike one way from Cali back home to Miami for less than $700.
