Cruise control inop
« on: June 10, 2011, 10:41:39 AM »

So the CC stopped working yesterday on the way to Cleveland to visit the R&R Hall of Fame.

DTC  P0577

Anyone know what the likely culprit could be?

This isn't at all helpful Jerry as you already know it's a cruise related issue.  Just looked and found the code to mean: Cruise Control Input High

Unfortunately no clue what that might specifically suggest though.  Since the cruise control functions are all handled within the ECM there aren't other pieces to troubleshoot aside from the switch.  Have you tried clearing the code to see if it returns?

Don, could it be the speedo sensor ?  If so the speedometer would be bouncing around and the turn indicators would not cancel also.  Lou

Lou, I don't know the new systems well enough to say.  Can only intuit ideas based on incomplete knowledge.  My hunch is the speedo sensor wouldn't cause a problem isolated only to the cruise control as Jerry is suggesting here.

My 08 Road King Classic started throwing me this code when it was only a few months old.  The cruise would go on and off on its own like it was possessed.  At times it kicked on with the cruise switch off and started accelerating the bike.  Dealer replaced the cruise on-off switch and the problem hasn't come back.  Could be water intrusion to a poorly sealed switch?

...could be worth pulling the sensor and cleaning off the metal debris that builds up on it, but like you say other things would be going on also.

Thanks guys for the input.  Before it quit and threw the code I had two instances of unintended acceleration while the CC was engaged.  The bike just started accelerating on its own.  Fortunately when I tapped the brake the CC disengaged.  First time I was able to re-engage but after the second episode it will not engage.

I did clear the code and pulled the main 40 amp fuse to re-set everything.  No joy.  Still no cruise and threw the code again.

Guess I'll be riding home sans CC.

Speedo is working OK and no DTCs from the speedo.  But just in case - where is the speedo sensor?

Jerry, given this most recent description can think of only one thing you might try from the road.  If one makes the assumption the res/accel switch was sticking and caused the acceleration spraying some contact cleaner on the switches might help.  Not terribly likely.  But easy and cheap to try and could be done while on the road.  So perhaps at least worth a shot.

Under the starter.  Though given your descriptions that doesn't seem a likely culprit.

Agree.  But just in case the speedo should go out to lunch it is good to know.

If the sensor is intemittent it will cause the bike to accelerate when its picks up a dropped signal ...it happened to me that way. I never look at my speedo but Bubba kept telling me my turn indicators were flashing all the time, never look at those turn indicator lights either. Then I started paying attention and the cruise surged with the a mph surge, from a intermittent signal from the sensor. Buddy Stubs in AZ diagnosed and cleaned the sensor and everything was fine after that for a while.  On the way home it happened again but this time the speedo and cruise just went out completely. I replaced it when I got home and no problems since. On the 00 RG its a real simple clean or replacement proceedure since the sensor is pretty close to the brain. The newer bikes  :nixweiss: ,  but that's just my experience.  Lou

Thanks Lou. Sounds like this could be the problem.  Doubt it is moisture related since (I know this is hard to believe but) the new '11 RUSE has almost 9k on it and has never seen rain - well not while riding anyway.  And I have only thouroughly washed it twice - last time a couple weeks ago.  Couple times (this morning also) it rained while it was parked at the hotel (but the bike was covered).

Could be heat related however, lol.  Riding up here from New Orleans last week and it has been dang near 100 degrees every day.  Cool front moved thru Cleveland this morning so hopefully the ride back home will be more pleasant.

On the way up we came thru Memphis and I 'played' tourist since our friends from Palm Beach are riding with us and wanted to go to Graceland.  I had been once before but it was many, many years ago - even before the airplanes were brought in.  I could not believe how it had morphed into such a large attraction.  We had a blast there and down on Beale Street that night.

So come on back and we'll go down to north Mississippi to some of the authentic blues joints.
