Received today--Rockford Fosgate 300W, 4-channel amp
« on: June 23, 2011, 12:29:45 PM »

Edit:  Just an update that the RF PBR300X4 (RF's designation for the amp) arrived today and hope to install it over the next couple of days.  Thanks, Scott (141_starlifter), for the fast service and excellent price.
After several months' delay, the Rockford Fosgate 300W, 4-channel, 4 ohm impedance, non-bridgeable amp is now shipping.  Pictures and specifications can be found via this link:

http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/product_details.asp?cat_id=2&series_id=6&family_id=21&item_id=120465&locale=en_US&p_status=

Installation instructions are in this link:

http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/rftech/library/2011/3_Amplifiers/1230-56471-01_PunchBRT4ch-MAN.pdf

The amp is very small and easily fits on top of the HK radio.  For those with XM/CB/Ipod modules on top of the HK radio, Scott has an excellent, modestly priced bracket that allows the modules to be installed under the radio with the amp mounted on top:

The amp comes with amp input and output connection harnesses, though you'll need to provide the power/ground/remote wiring, which RF sells separately.

Hope to have mine in a week or so, with installation to follow.

Carl

Carl - so in your opinion, how does this thing rate compare to the J&M 125.4?  I thought that 500w was rated at 2-Ohms, which I'm guessing would put it in range of the 300w at 4-Ohms? Is that correct?

However, in reviewing the site you posted, it says it can only handle 4-Ohms, so I guess if you have the 2-Ohm J&M 7.25's 's already, you're out of luck?

I would appreciate your insight.

I guess this is the substitute for the Hawg-Wired 300w 4ch amp that Yaffe is planning to use in his Roadglide House Party system. ??

mrmagloo,  w/o getting into series wiring of 2 ohm speakers, you wouldn't want to run four 2 ohm speakers with the RF 4 channel amp.  I'm not an audio expert by any means, but I have read of wiring a 1 ohm resistor to each speakers + signal from the amp to raise the impedance seen by the amp.  Whether this would work for you or not, I don't know; but, you could ask an audio professional.

DesertHOG, I'm not familiar with Yaffe's audio packages or plans.

A nice feature of the RF amp is its 2/4 channel selector switch.  It allows a two-channel input to be split to create 4-channel outputs; e.g. a 2011 SESG has two channels out of the HK radio; those could be the inputs to the RF amp; and the 4 channel outputs could be used for the fairing speakers and fairing lower speakers, tour pak speakers, or saddlebag lid speakers.

Thanks for posting this up Carl.
I hope it performs as well as the specs indicate - I have two coming next week as well.

Already trying to find room to add a third (well - a PBR300x1)  ;)

Looking forward to speaking with you on comparative install notes!

My installation will be comparatively simple.  The "front" channel of the amp will be used for the fairing speakers, and the "rear" channel for the fairing lower speakers.  The Hogtunes Hogpod tweeters will be wired directly to the front speaker outputs of the HK head unit.  The amp inputs will be the high level (i.e. speaker) outputs of the HK, so the RCA connectors supplied with the RF amp kit's harness will be removed.  The HK radio is already set-up as four channel with fader function.

The power, ground, and remote wires previously installed for the Arc 125.2 amp will be reused.  EDIT:  RF recommends using 10 ga. wire for power and ground.  The Arc wiring is 12 ga. so I'll be replacing the Arc power and ground wiring with 10 ga. wire.  Also, RF's installation instructions say to use no more than 30" length for amp's ground wire.  Whether this is related to their Boosted Rail Technology design of this small amp, I don't know.  But since my Arc wiring used a ground stud in front of the battery (i.e. more than 30" from amp), I'll attach the amp's ground wire to the ground stud on the upper triple tree; about 18" or so in length.

So, comparatively speaking, my installation will be a simple, plain vanilla, set-up.  I'll post some pictures and information on the installation.

So has anyone installed the RF PBR300X4 amp yet?  Wondering how it sounds compared to the Arc 125.2 and if the extra bit of power is a nice kicker.

My installation and initial impressions are in this thread on hdforums.com:

http://www.hdforums.com/forum/touring-models/661124-installation-and-initial-review-rockford-fosgate-300w-4-channel-amp.html

The RF amp is like having two Arc mini 125.2's if you're using 4 ohm impedance speakers since the RF amp is 75W per channel and the Arc is 70W per channel using 4 ohm impedance speakers.

I'm very happy with the Amp driving modestly priced Infnity Reference 6.5" speakers in the fairing and fairng lowers; the Hogtunes Hog Pod tweeters are powered only by the HK head unit.  This set-up is a significant improvement over my previous set-up using the Arc 125.2 driving the fairing lower speakers and the HK radio driving the fairing speakers and tweeters which I was happy with, and only changed out the Arc because of the new RF 4-channel amp.

If you have CB/XM/Ipod modules, you can buy Scott's bracket to install the (2) modules below the radio and the amp above the radio which is what I did--one module (CB) only in my case.

TIF2 (Rich) is in the midst of installing the RF amp on his SESG2 using Hertz speakers and tweeters in the faring and fairing lowers, and a separate RF amp in the tour pak for the 6.5" speakers in the pods.

hello,i have read your post in the HDforum link.

i was wondering how would i go about using this amp on my CBR bike, and if i would be able to connect via Ipod instead of a head unit?

yes i know its not a harley but i want an audio system still..

i was thinking some 4'' in the fairings or bigger and tweeters near the gauges under the windscreen.

would  i be able to hook up tweeters to this amp or would i need to run a crossover and a mids n highs type system?

so my idea of a setup for a streetbike would be

RF 300.4
-4'' or bigger coaxils in the fairings.
tweeters near the gauges
-i would need ipod connection.

any suggestions let me know

Has anyone tried installing the RF amp on top of the XM and CB modules without the relocation bracket?

It looks like there might be enough clearance if the amp is mounted right against the gauges.  I think it would involve rearranging the factory harness a bit though.

For those who may be considering this amp in the future:
On my 2011 SEUC, I was able to get this amp to fit on top of the stock head unit by re-arranging the upper loom.
Without any special bracket or relocating the cb and xm modules.
