There and back again: a CVOer's tale
« on: June 27, 2011, 12:49:21 PM »

as with most grand adventures this one started months before we hit the road. typically this involves conversations with steve and bill, we try and decide how much time to take where we want to go before and after the GTG and the best way to maximize our time on the road.

for this years trip we had settled on :trailer: to Colorado and make a southwest/pacific coast trip around the Tahoe GTG. bill had sent us a preliminary route that looked great all we had to do was wait out the winter and spring and hit the road.

as spring finally arrived some simple upgrades of the SERK turned into a month long project and we got the news from bill that he was not going to be able to make the trip this year. with our original plans no longer an option and still having not put any miles on the SERK yet for the season steve and i began to discuss how we could get to Tahoe on our original schedule. we figured it out to be (4) 725 mile days, with no riding yet done on the season this sounded like an insane proposition. i was fortunate enough to be able to take the SERK on a business trip in early may about 900 miles round trip as a warm up ride and a chance get used to the changes to the SERK.

with a warm up ride complete it was time for a new rear tire and brake pads all around. its less then 1 month until we hit the road its time to decide on our final route to Tahoe and think about where we want to go afterwards. using the original plan from bill for some ideas we decide to continue to frisco bay after the GTG stopping at metal dragon for oil changes, head south to vegas and the hoover damn then work our way east with intentions of making this a 3 coast trip east coast/west coast/gulf coast before returning home.

need to download from cameras and GPS, to be continued...

day 1 fri jul 10th:
we left marlborough to head west. because we had to cover so much ground to get to tahoe we had thought we might try and make an iron butt ride out of day 1 so we printed out the paperwork and had a witness for signed. we had figured if we made it on day 1 or at least got close we could also pick up a 1500 in 36 hrs.

well never even got close to 1k on day 1 but did make it near toledo OH about 735 miles

Gotta believe you're talking June and not July but it looks like a great trip! Wish I had been there! Looking forward to the rest of the journey.
