question about a weird engine rattle noise
« on: July 24, 2011, 12:20:00 PM »

On my 06 seuc. Rode home last week about 800 miles.  Bike ran fine.  Rode around town for about a week then one night when i pulled up and stopped the bike started making a loud rattling noise.  Kinda sounded just like the shifter or something on the bike was loose.  When i got back to the house tried to listen to see what it was.  Wouldn't make it.  Tried it again. and only makes it if you are going slow kind of lugging it in a way and after you stop i try to get off and see where its coming from but after you stop it will quit making noise after about 5 secs.  The bike runs fine down the road.  Still road it all the way back without any problems but when slowing down under like 30 mph makes a crazy sound then goes away after you stop for a bit.  Any thoughts on what it could be?

About 500-600 miles before i left i did switch out my gear drives and redshift 575 cam to the hydrolic cam plate and woods tw-5 cams.  But would figure if it was something in that would make noise all the time.  All i can think of is maybe its a lifter not pumping up or something.

Do you have the finned head bolt cover bridge? If so remove them and check the mount cap that is on top of the head bolts. The allen set screw may have worked loose and may be causing the bridge to rattle at certain engine speeds. Had them work loose on my 05 SEEG and drove me nuts until I found one of them loose.

I had the same thing happen on my '06 SEUC with the finned bridges.

BUT, I also had a loose compensator nut on the same bike, another instance.  It made a hell of a noise, but not all the time.  However, you could feel it in the left floorboard when it did it.  If it's the compensator nut, HAVE IT CHECKED IMMEDIATELY.  I was fortunate that it happened in my home town and not on the road.  Took it in, had the dealer properly torque the nut with red locktite and never had the issue again.  I had to sell the bike when it had 25K on the clock, but once properly torqued, the comp nut will stay put.

One other mystery noise I had on the '06...when new, I had the automatic chain tensioner installed.  All was fine.  Was about to leave on a trip, and didn't have time to service the bike myself, so let the dealer do the service.  During the trip, the bike started making a hell of a racket on the primary side.  It would come and go, depending on speed/rpm and what gear I was in.  On closer inspection, I could see fingerprints on the primary chain adjustment cover, which should not have been removed because the auto adjuster eliminates the need for manual adjustment.  When I got back home, I determined that the brilliant HD "tech" had "adjusted" my auto adjuster, causing the chain to make an awful noise.  I pulled the primary off myself, reset the auto adjuster...problem solved.

I don't have any head bolt covers.

The first thing i thought the noise was a loose primary chain or something in there.  So checked that all out and found nothing wrong.  Thats why i am kinda puzzled on the noise.  Looked everything over and couldn't find anything loose anywhere.  And its just crazy it only makes noise at certain times and stops after you stop for about 5 secs.  And the fact that i rode it about 900 miles home between 80-90mph the whole way. figured i would of found something broke by then.  Got the same milage as before.  Pulled the plugs when i got home and they looked perfect.  So i pulled out my lifters and blocks today to see if i could find something in there but didn't see anything and no play in the camshafts.  just has me baffled.  Thats why i figured only thing it could maybe be is a lifter that is going through menopause or something and can't make up its mind if it wants to work or not.

Panhead, check the center bolt in the front motor mount and the upper mount bolts, if you have true douls
check the rear pipe bracket over the trans. hope it's something minor.   axil

Axil.  I checked those off the bat too.  that was about the only thing that made sense why it doesn't make noise under power but only when its lugging around.  All of that stuff was tight.  I do have true duals and checked that also.  Had one of my friends bikes break that peice off also.  I just hate to rip a motor apart looking for something crazy like that.  Can't think of what it could possibly be.

While in the primary, did you check the compensator bolt?

Ya the compensator was good.

I have some fueling lifters in there have screaming eagle pushrods and run them about 3 turns.  The same preload i had on them for the last 10k miles.  Just not sure if a lifter can just make a noise every now and again.  Figure if its not set up right would make it all the time not just when it wanted to.  Unless its just going out.

panhead1, I would definitely check all your externally attached items before going into the motor if it runs good going down the road. Could be something as simple as a loose footboard or peg, loose where a blinker or other light is attached and or heatshield. Those are things that have happened to me.CAHDBIKER

Me too. Twice!
