I'll throw this out there, do what you will with it....but if your bike is running lean, it'll also run hotter......

I sat in traffic in DC Sunday for Rolling Thunder with a friend on a regular Ultra, his went into overheat mode 3 times atleast, mine didn't hit it once, and I didn't have a problem with the heat coming off of it like I did on my '04 Ultra.  I know I have an oil cooler over him, but I don't think it made that much of a difference, and it was hot as hell in DC Sunday......a guy on a Green '05 SE yelled over to me in traffic asking if mine was overheating as bad his was....had to tell him it wasn't.....
You didn't mention whether you still have your lowers on, and do you happen to know what your oil temperature was? On the way back from DC/Md. on Monday (85 - 90 degree temps) my oil got up to 236 degrees, and I still have my lowers on.

I wonder if anyone has any hard data (same bike, same conditions, same time of day) as to how much lower (if any) the bike (oil temperature) will be with and without lowers in city/highway cruising? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

If you accidentally leave your heated seat on low while riding in hot weather things get real nice and toasty. thats what happened to me this weekend.

Fired00d,

Only reason I remove my lowers is to work on something, otherwise they stay on, I did have the vents opened up though.  I didn't really check my oil temp, have the temp/level dipstick, just didn't check it.....perhaps next time I'll think about it....

Thanks. The only time I've had mines off is to work on bike also. Be interesting to find out if it's myth or truth about bike being cooler w/o lowers. I can possible go along w/this in city driving, but because of the heat the 103's build up when sitting/stop and go traffic I try to avoid this as much as possible (add to that I think w/lowers off and no air movement bike still could have problems w/heat).

I'm just wondering if when bike is moving are lowers that much of a detriment to engine? I'm thinking that because of the design of the lowers that they may force more air pass the jugs? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

It's kinda like which oil is best, you'll hear varying opinions, I'll keep mine on.

I also remove lowers in the summer (although I really like them, looks-wise and for the rain, as Fired00d said).....just makes this very hot bike much more rideable in the hot climates...ie: SOUTH!  [smiley=sunny.gif] [smiley=vrolijk_1.gif] har!  spyder

'06,

Per H-D, normal operating temp (oil) for the 103 is 230 degrees.  This is why the cooler is a good idea on these bikes, and why synthetic oil is a must.

Ditto.  I just don't like getting buffeted by all that air with the lowers off.  Got talked into removing them on trip to Sturgis in '02.  Then I went on to Glacier, Yellowstone and Jackson Hole.  Man was I cussin' when the temp in Jackson dropped to low 30s.  Never again.  They stay on and I'll just sweat if caught in traffic in hot weather.  JMHO.

When I went x-country in '03 I had a bike with soft lowers for the crashbar, going from LA to Vegas it was HOT, without the lowers my legs were burning up in those temps, when we stopped for gas I put em on and it helped alot, made for a much more comfortable ride into Vegas.  So they do some good in the heat also......and don't you guys give me the "It's a dry heat" BS, I felt like I was riding thru a damn oven.......

Glad to read your comments on the fan. My 06 Ultra se seems to be a lot hotter than the 97 80 cu in. I keep the lowers on all year. The engine did not go into the overheat mode this week but it did seem to be overly hot for an 82 degree day. Has anyone came up with a oil cooler fan? Also the short pipe connecting the two exhaust is starting to yellow. I don't have the temp gauge for the oil yet but it is next on the list.
P.S. Sorry to hear about the loss of life this weekend, our condolences to all family and freinds. I just received an e-mail that a freinds son was killed in St. Louis this weekend by a driver who pulled out in front of him.

Hey BigR55, you know, I've got a 80ci EVO and it is sooooo cool riding in the summer compared to the SEEG.  Part of it is that the TwinCam 88 normally runs quite a bit hotter in stock form than the 80 EVO.  I've seen guys/gals at Daytona in stop and go traffic on a stock Ultra Classic twin cam w/ the lowers on actually have their legs turn red as a beet from the rising engine heat......so, it's not just the big twin cam engines in those conditions that punish you.  Gotta keep those air cooled engines moving thru the air.  har!  [smiley=divers009.gif] spyder

While you're moving, it seems like the lowers (ones with the adjustable vents) would actually force more air, and at a faster rate of speed, past the jugs....sittin' still in traffic, having them off might help a little bit, but I don't think it would be that significant.  I think HD used to recommend taking them off, before they came out with the vented models, when it got above 50 degrees...hell, that's about 10 months a year down here.   :)
