GPS -- Nuvi 350
« on: May 28, 2006, 08:10:13 AM »

Does anyone have experience using Garmin's Nuvi 350 GPS system?  If so how did you mount it and did you hardwire into the power system? How is the glare factor and any other performance issues?

I would be concerned about getting this unit wet.

I don't think that one is waterproof or water resistant, so that could be a big problem. I have the 76CSX and am very, very pleased with it.  I'm mounting with the Teckmount system like 103 Deerhunter used....they have a new plate that has the hole pattern for AMP so no need for the adapter any longer.  Just get a cradle for whatever unit you choose and go from there.  If you have a unit with a hard drive, you might want to get the rubber mounting plate Techmount sells, but if theres no hard drive, there's no need.  the 76CSX has removable chips for memory...it will also float if dropped in the water.

Good luck with whatever you choose.  I got the best deal from GPSonsale.com

Great Point about waterproof fearure.  Imagine, I did not think of it.  The unit seemed so portable and neat for travel everywhere.  Maybe it so small and easy on/off we could just pop it my shirt pocket.  :)  Thanks for the comments.

DW...There are a lot of good units out there, depending on what you're going to do with it.  I hike, fish, ski, etc, so wanted a unit that was completely portable, yet would work on the bike and in the car too. The one I got will run off Nickle H batteries (rechargeable) AA, or of course, Alkaline (they won't last as long).  It takes two. You can get removeable chips up to 512MB. It doesn't talk to you, but beeps at you when you are approaching turns, and when you need to make the turn. And like I said, it's completely waterproof, so you can take it on a boat without fear of dropping it overboard.  It won't fit in your pocket, though maybe if you wear cargo pants, or typical outdoor type jackets. Couldn't be happier with this unit for my needs...a lot of the guys on here are using the 27XX series and are liking them as well.  I got the Deluxe case with mine from the on-line store mentioned above...will hold the unit, plus extra batteries, chips, etc., and comes with a shoulder strap, or you can put it on your belt, pack, etc. I also purchased the V7 of the City Navigator, Topo of the Eastern US...if you get the City Navigator "Kit", it comes with the CD, cigarette lighter power cord, a couple of different holders for use in the car.  Whatever you choose, GPSonsale is by far the cheapest price I found for any Garmin products, and had no problem with customer service. One warning: Make sure you choose fastest route on the unit instead of shortest route....big difference in how it wants you to get where you're going.  Have fun shopping!!

An excellent suggestion.  I will add it to the list.  Today I rode with some guys who had installed the HD mounted unit.  It was ok.  I don't think it would work on the CUSE.  I like the units recommended here on the site --- I would need to mount on the handlebars because I am not too pleased about removing the leather strip on the dashboard.  I need more and more input.

I like your input and appreciate the response.  THanks.

The HD unit is OK, it's just overpriced.  It's a Garmin Quest, if I'm not mistaken, and they've now come out with a handlebar mount instead of cutting a hole in your inner fairing....not something I'd be willing to do. RAM makes all kinds of mounting systems and cradles for all units, so check out their site and the Techmount site for different options.  Look at 103Deerhunter's mount...he's got good pics of how he did his with the Techmount system, along with one of the 27XX Garmin systems...I just needed something more portable, so went with the 76 series.

They are handy devices and fun to play with!! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
