Good idea :2vrolijk_21:  I will be doing that the next time my fairing is off.....

Have done that on those bottom two screws with any fairing I expect to have in my hand more than once.  Done that for years.  The nuts stay in the nut driver coming off so you don't drop anything.  Even better is the studs come through the holes so you never have to worry about getting those screws started straight.  Just put the nuts on.  A couple little studs make the whole task much less of a pain in the ass.

My lil 2 cents on this would be... ALWAYS put fender cover on front fender when doin anything on the front such as removing fairing.. Its jus toooo ezy to drop somethin on that fender ..

Took them out and replaced the screws with studs to make it easier in the future on Travis's 2011 not too long ago.

Don,

What length works well for the "studs" (cut off screws)?

Don,

What length works well for the "studs" (cut off screws)?

Do these rarely enough I always double check to make sure I'm right when the time comes.  But if my feeble memory still serves you need a piece of threaded stock (cut off bolt) 1/4" USS x 1 1/4".  If you do cut the head off an 1 1/4" bolt be sure and run a nut off that end of it a few times to chase the threads.

That will screw in, bottom out, and leave a Goldilocks amount (not too long, not too short, just right) sticking out.  I also always put red loctite on the stud as I screw it in to the fairing so will never have to mess with it backing out with the nut.

If you don't want to do what Don says,  go to ACE hardware and buy four 3/4" long allen screws.  Takes 2 per side.  Bottom one out and then screw the other in on top of it to get your 1 1/2" as about the longest allen screw you can get is 3/4"..  FWIW

The only down side to the studs is that they can catch on wires while sliding the fairing in place.

Need some additional help.  Have removed all the screws & windshield.  Faring seems to be hanging up on the bottom by the headlamp.  Not sure what to do.  Don't want to force & break something.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Reach down with you hand and unplug the headlight from the back of the fairing.

I haven't done the stud thing.. I use a magnetic tork driver and that seems ro work well on the lower right screw. # 27.   The left side, I have enough room in there to start that one by hand.  Do not over tighten.   Which is easy to do on the top.  Then the brass studs pull out.  Or on the sides by the speakers.   Then you just crack the spot around the holes on the inner fairing.  I've done that before and made a repair.  Just tryin to help.  :)

On # 6 and 7 , put the bike on a jack(both wheels off the ground) , turn wheel to left , hold tire with foot , right side bolt is easily accessed with extension and torx driver. Repeat on left side.

This is a simple but great tip!  Normally I do put the bike on a jack prior to removing the outer fairing.  In a hurry last week I attempted to do it on the side stand and you can guess what happened...

When loosening the right lower screw (#7) I didn't have my free hand in the correct position under the screw and eventually heard a "ting".  The darn screw rather than falling straight down to the floor as it would have if the bike was level on a jack, it managed to fall into the chrome cap under the triple tree between the forks.  Could have used one of those handy magnets at that point, however not having one I had to remove the cover to retrieve the screw and then mess with lining everything back up to reinstall the cover!

When I reinstall my fairing it WILL be on the jack.  Lesson learned.

You really don't have to jack up the bike to remove the outer fairing. Just get a magnetic torx and it is very simple. It makes the job so much easier.
