How do you remove outer fairing ?
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:42:58 AM »

Any tips on removing outer fairing, need to get access for fitting GPS. Thought I'd ask before I start, just in case I go about it the wrong way.

About the easiest thing on these bikes......remove the screws that hold the windshield at the top of the fairing.  Then on the inside remove the screws on either out side edge of the fairing. :2vrolijk_21:

I remove the inside screws first, then the top windshield screws so that I can hang on to it as I remove the last one.

And dont drop it !!!! I remove the top middle screw last by hand after loosening so I'll have a good grip on the fairing.  If you've added spot lights cover them with a towell

If you've got a pair of old socks laying around, use them to cover the Aux lights, and a bath towel on the front fender.  As you pull it off, you can then let it rest on the socks while you unplug the headlight.  And don't overtighten when putting it all back together!

My street Glide has aux lights...... I installed them just so I would have a place to rest the outer fairing while I unplug the headlight!!! ;D

They no longer have the two (PITA) screws between the forks on the inside? Numbers 6 & 7 in picture below. :nixweiss:

Those two are still there Gary.  Took them out and replaced the screws with studs to make it easier in the future on Travis's 2011 not too long ago.

Don't over tighten the screws when installing. You may pull the brass inserts out, or over stress the plastic mounts and they will break off with time and vibration.

Everyone is right on with their tips.  The only thing I would add is when reinstalling the screws, start them several threads by hand.  Don't think they are started and then tighten with a socket to force the issue as they can easily be started cross threaded.

Ah hell... they are so much fun to go fishing for them when they drop ::)... one of the first times I took my fairing off I had to go get one of those extendable magnets to find one when I dropped it.. They are good for finding hiding places that you never thought existed on the bike. :sauer005:

On # 6 and 7 , put the bike on a jack(both wheels off the ground) , turn wheel to left , hold tire with foot , right side bolt is easily accessed with extension and torx driver. Repeat on left side.
