California Ride
« on: May 28, 2006, 03:43:10 PM »

I'll be picking up a bike in Oakland on the 16th of July. I talked to Jim (HD-Dude) and think he will be meeting up with us and just wondered if anybody had suggestions for some rides or routes to take. Planning on Yosemite and Eureka but everything else is up in the air. It will be a 7 day cruise.
Thanks for any input

I can be there on the 16th......I'm assuming Bob Dron's? [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  I could ride that day with you but that's it......can't take time off of work due to Cripple Creek and Sturgis and a few other vacations throughout the year.

If you want to do Yosemite on that Sunday, I'll volunteer to be your guide.  I know that park like the back of my hand.

Other areas that you may want to ride are SF, the Golden Gate, Lombard Street (billed as the crookedest street in the world......type in a Google search for Lombard Street, San Francisco), Fisherman's Wharf, etc.  Then there's the Napa Valley.  I'd also suggest Hwy. 49 either from the north (Eureka.....but it doesn't go that far north) to Yosemite or from Yosemite going north towards Eureka.  It's the gold country hiway.....two lanes, lots of twisties and major amount of Calif. history on that road.  Also, whichever direction you take Hwy. 49, you'll want to take Hwy. 1 and Hwy. 101 the other way, so that you can see the California Redwoods......the oldest living thing on earth......also, the largest trees in the world.  They have trees that are still growing that have a store in the trunk of it and another one that you can actually ride the bike through!

How long are you going to be here?  Where are you coming from?  Have you been to Calif. before?

P/S

Give these guys time to get home from work and they'll help you out with anything that I've missed.

Jim knows northern Calif.......so does Andy (AK) and just about all these guys.  You'll probably have more then a few of these guys meet you (the official Calif. welcoming committee! [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]).  What time do you plan on being at the bike rental?

If both Eureka and Yosemite and must see's then I would head to Yosemite from the Bay area, From Yosemite take 120 west than head North on 49 towards Sacramento Pick up highway 16 north east than take highway 20 around the top of Clearlake to Highway 101 north to Eureka. Leaving Eureka take 101 south to highway 1 south and take the coast all the way back down across the Golden Gate Bridge through SF then back to Oakland.

I wish I had a week to take off and ride with you! Be sure to post the time your expected at Oakland HD and we'll have a welcome party there to greet you

Moved this thread down here since it's not a Ride Report.  I'm thinking that's probably why you didn't get a response faster, to your question.  I think it'll get more views from the Calif. crew down here.

Wow Thanks for the suggestions. We will be there for the afternoon pick-up so I would guess from around 12 to 12:30 on Sunday. Look forward to meeting you all and riding in California. Yes it's Dron Harley in Oakland.

JCZ- I'm coming in from Naples FL. I've been to CA several times but this will be the first riding trip. I'll be out there till the following Sunday on the bike. Fly home Monday.

Thanks

I didn't see any mention of Monterey or Carmel, Santa Cruz, Route 1 along the coast.  Again, some great riding and I should be able to make it to Oakland for the day as part of the greeting commitee.

Highway 1 all the way down to Big Sur is nice, with the good Nude beach rewards there. (then continue on down to Black Beach San Diego)   Black Beach number 1 nude beach in Cali. Be sure and take your digital camera and Please, please please.....post pics on Ride report.  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

I may go to Drons too, but only if you guys promise to peel me off the service manager and one certain mechanic there. I have issues still unresolved.

Sounds more like service manager issues!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

I've read some not so complimentary remarks on several sites about Drons HD. :o

Was visiting Dron's yesterday and was informed that the service manager in question has resigned.  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
