Another thought on over heat issue.
« on: August 07, 2011, 01:10:56 PM »

Not to bad mouth any oils out there. This is what I found, Have an 07 street glide Dave Mackey 103 100hp, 100 torque engine oil temp in the dash brake in period regular 20w50 after 5k miles tried syn 3 running temp went from 210deg f to 50 to 60 deg hotter first 10 miles. checked sending unit,no issue. made a few calls to the engine builders told them the start of the story and they finished the sentence on the heat issue. I have tried this on twice same result. I run amsoil 20w50 syn. temp. 180 to 210 deg f I have 20k miles on this bike I know how it runs. Dealer did my first oil change on my 2011 Ultra classic CVO and from here on it will get amsoil and a heat gauge to see if this trend continues. I'm new here but not the two wheeled world hope this is some help to some try it on your next change see what happens for you. keep us posted.

Are you saying the Amsoil runs way cooler (180-210f) than the HD syn 3 (250-260f)?

 :ROFLOL:

Sure, if the bike with the Amsoil is in Greenland and the bike with SYN3 is in Dallas.

PS  -  I think this is another of those threads that needs to be moved to the "humor" section, or perhaps the "selling" section.

I hope that was a tongue in cheek statement, Cowboy...those two things have no correlation whatsoever.  HD does not warranty your bike past the 2 year unlimited mileage time period.  The extra 3 years that you paid $1400 for, is an extended service plan provided by an independent company...just like insurance.  HD does not even have to provide the ESP warranty work...the company you bought the plan from would just as easily pay a reputable independent shop.

While Syn 3 is not a horrible product, it is clearly inferior to other products on the market, most of them at less expensive price points...or at least an equal price point.  I refuse to pay HD prices for an inferior product...when it comes to oil, that is.

Sorry Guys, but that is correct.  I bought a extended WARRANTY for that $1400... Maybe Harley Davidson does not offer it in America, but I bought an extended Warranty from Harley Davidson Australia.  And on the engine cover was a sticker from HDA, that said something like the engine was designed for Syn 3 HD oil...

It wasn't tounge and cheek actually:  I figure if they recommend it, and they offer an unlimited engine/bike warranty extension except for normal wearing parts, the Syn 3 must meet some good test results if they give me an unlimited mileage Warranty on the engine for that long... I do have to have Service Records, and on page 6 they do say the Dealer has the option of replacing parts with either new or reconditioned Harley parts, but it is an extended Warranty on the bike for anything that breaks besides normal wear and tear like belts and such.  THAT is why I will stick with the Syn 3, if they believe in it for the long haul to give me that, it must be good enough.  They are recommending 4000 kms or once a year oil changes if you do not drive much, but at my 15,000 km average per year they are saying 8000 km oil changes which is 5000 miles.

So, are you Guys saying you cannot buy an actual Extended Warranty in America from HD?  This one comes HD Badged on the Brochure... Here is a picture of the cover- I scanned it:

That is sold by Harley Dealers but the program is managed and administered by a third party just like they are here in the states (look at the bottom line(s) on the brochure you posted). In essence you have an Extended Service Plan (ESP) just like we have here.
