Definitely felt here in Norfolk area. They evacuated buildings in downtown Norfolk. Local news says it was a 5.8 to 6.0.....epicenter near Charlottesville Va.

Fired00d are you OK
??????

Two nuclear reactors at Lake Anna were shut down too and are on generator power now.

They are saying the latest hurricane will probably hit N.C. and then go through us this weekend.....always something I guess?
Epicenter was about 30 miles from me... As Neal stated I didn't even feel a thing I was driving and wife called me screaming hysterically. Soon after that FD radio started going crazy and Blackberry with emails. We went into disaster mode and all staff was called back to HQ which lasted until about 5:00 PM. Other then a few falls, and minor cuts/bruises from people falling we were lucky.

About 10 minutes ago we had another "tremor"... WTH!!! :shocked2:

No big thing.....just roll with it. ;D

On the news tonight they were saying if this earthquake had happened here in Cali. it may not even hit the news, depending on what other news was happening that day. :nixweiss:

Was on the wire feeds a bit ago that Parks Service discovered a crack either at or near the top of the Washington Monument that is assumed to be caused by the earthquake.  Engineers will get in to it starting tomorrow but for now the Monument is closed "indefinitely" until Parks Service decides what to do next.

Heard that on the local news, also said it appears to be leaning.

JC - We did hit the news in our area today.. A train derailed in the middle of city of Lincoln causing a propane tanker to ignite with several other propane tankers behind it. The city evacuated everyone from their homes within a square mile, about 7,000 residents at 12 noon today and dont expect they can return until the fire burns out sometime tomorrow late afternoon..  ''What a way to spend an evening after a day at work..   >:(

I just saw an explanation of the differences between an East coast and a West coast quake. On the East coast we are on one big plate and if the plate moves it is felt on the whole plate... basically from Michigan to Maine to Georgia. Like if you shake one corner of a large table the whole table shakes. On the West Coast the plates are separated and earthquakes are very localized, like if you had 4 tables pushed close together you could shake one and not affect the others.

Difference is there are so many faults on the west coast that a 'quake/tremor that happens there (west coast) may stay localized where as a 'quake/tremor on the east coast travels for long distances because there not being other faults to absorb/keep it localized. Think of a piece of concrete cracked in two places... you drop a steel ball (heavy enough to crack it) in the middle of the two cracks... you'll get breaks/cracks up to the existing cracks but they will not extend to either side of those existing cracks.

BTW - We had another 4.5 aftershock last night about 1:00 AM

Uh-oohhhhh, two earthquakes in Nor Cal yesterday.  One around Mammoth Lakes and another around Oakland.  Must be the multiple fault zones thing that Gary was talkin about. :huepfenlol2:

How many fault zones there are has little to do with the magnatude on the Ridhter scale of the quake.  A 5.8 quake is just that, regardless of how many fault zones are around.  By the way, the major fault zones (we don't count all the little ones because.......well, they just don't count ;) ) run the full length of Calif. and even run off into the ocean and continue up along the west coast.

Quakes in the past week in Calif....   http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqscanv/

Now I'm native Californian, just a tad over 60 years and I've only felt one quake.....the Loma Preata in the bay area, where I was working at the time.  The large majority are just not felt.

Agree and my explanation was how it was felt in so many places vs "localized". The reason (IMO) why it was in the media so much is because it was felt by so many... but hell... you know more about them then I do. :wall: ;D

Oh, and I might add the depth of the fault and the type of rock the fault is in plays a part in how widespread the effects are too.
