Improving the CVO line/brand-thoughts...........
« on: August 23, 2011, 09:38:42 PM »

I was looking at the beautiful colors of the 2012 CVO SG and got to thinking about ways the CVO line/brand can be improved and wondered what others thought.  Here are a few that my pea-brain could think of:

-Heads-up-display (HUD) for touring CVO's
-Priority status like maintenance scheduling that allows you to get work done on short notice
-CVO certified techs that are assigned to you and really get to know you and your bike
-"fixed" trade in value for your CVO when applied to a purchase of a new model year CVO
-CVO clothing line
-Option to buy CVO with ready to paint tins that we can really make our own

What are some of the other ideas out there?

Timely that you posted this as I had an interesting discussion with both CVO and HD clothing representatives out at the Rally 2 weeks ago.

I happened to be wearing the shirt in the photo below and I asked to see someone in CVO management. I turned around and asked them why they would not sell me a shirt like the one I was wearing. The nice lady looked a bit upset until I told her I made it myself and that I didn't sell them to others. She told me I really need to speak to someone over in motorclothes.

I went over there and asked to speak with a manager and met another nice lady who was also somewhat disturbed at my shirt until I told her I did it myself and I don't sell or intend to sell them. I told her I would much prefer to purchase nicely designed and manufactured CVO based clothing from the mother ship. She said she didn't think there was enough demand. I asked her if she had ever heard of cvoharley.com, she said she had. I asked her if she was aware there were over 15,000 members of the website, she seemed surprised. She said there would be a minimum number of pieces required to sell before HD would produce a CVO clothing product. I asked what that number was. She would not say.

My takeaway was that CVO specific clothing isn't gonna happen any time soon. Not sure if it is a product silo issue of really one of economics. I also asked why they didn't produce more product with just the "Screamin' Eagle" logo without the "Performance Parts" added at the bottom. Told her I owned most of the pieces with just the eagle head and the Screamin' Eagle text and that I was up for more. Not sure she caught the nuance of that request.

It seems the Moco isn't quite sure what they want the brands CVO and Screamin' Eagle to represent. Some HD employees working the tents thought they were the same brand. I still see them as quite unique.

Until the time I can purchase what I want from the Moco, I will continue to design and alter pieces I can find.

I did get a tongue lashing for putting my bike designation in the bar portion of the bar/shield. She said nothing is ever allowed to go inside the bar. A few minutes later I saw a piece of HD gear with Harley Davidson stitched inside the bar. Guess not all rules are universally applied.

I don't mean to be too hard on the two nice people I spoke with. I worked at AT&T for 20 years so I am painfully aware of what different divisions of the same company can do to each other and how uncoordinated things can get. They were both willing to listen to my requests and said they would take my feedback back to Milwaukee.

I still think Custom Vehicle Operations should be truly custom. As a customer we should be able to go to a dealer and sit down and do a build sheet with all our parts installed at the factory level.
It would be nice to have a loaner bike when ours is in the shop or at least a courtesy van to take us home. Maybe even a bike pickup service.
I know the above is just a dream though.

At this price point, that would be very nice......

The biggest addition they could make would be service oriented.

Loaner bike when down for warranty work.
Free bike pickup for warranty work.
Priority for bike work/services.
Extended HOG membership (lifetime? or 5 years?)

Priority service for CVOs might make CVO owners a little happier...but...with the pizz poor service that more and more dealerships are getting known for, all the non-CVO HD owners would get even more jaded with the brand when they are treated as second class citizens. Catering to a few only to alienate the masses would not be in the MOCO's best interest.

Am I missing something here?

I am sorry to be the "fly in the ointment", but I'm confused.  :confused5:

We purchased these beautiful CVO Screamin' Eagle motorcycles because we wanted the best.
We purchased them full well knowing that they are considerably more expensive than the regular lineup.
We purchased them to be unique, especially with "numbered editions".
We purchased them without any promises of VIP service.
And obviously we purchased them realizing the value of such a bike.

Why now do some think we deserve more than what we received?

I've mentioned this before on another thread... I think the best thing the MoCo could do to enhance our ownership experience is to keep these bikes unique by limiting production.  I feel that they are keeping some models way too long, such as 7 consecutive years of the SEUC and now 3 years running for the SESG.  Even the SERG's are starting to appear more often than in the past.

I realize that the market is there and the MoCo is in the business of making money.  However they started this special lineup on a very exclusive concept and I just feel they are "milking it" too much and loosing their creative flair with some... How ridiculous of them to have two model years (with added 1/2 year models thrown in for good measure) with the exact same paint scheme, just in different colours!  They too must be getting tired of the same old thing???  I say this with all due respect to SEUC owners in 2010 & 2011.

I feel they would best serve the CVO lineup by introducing new models such as a Screamin' Eagle Heritage or maybe a Sportster model, and take a break from the same old thing... If they did this, I'm certain when they reintroduced a "new" Screamin Eagle Ultra in 2015 or 16, the dealers wouldn't be able to keep them on the floor!  AND our value for our beautiful current model CVO's would hold or even rise a bit.

Just my humble opinion and 2 cents worth.

I agree with your thinking about varying the models that they produce. That would sdhake things up a bit and may help the current models hold their value.

On the other hand, I don't think it was said as something we "deserve", but rather something additional unique to the CVO buyer. For ex.--the HOG memebership--anybody who buys a new bike gets a year, maybe the CVO buyer could get some additional years. Not a deserve thing, just a perk....just a thought....

I agree with you, we know what we purchased.

But what I would prefer, that they keep the CVO-bikes
on the same level (seen from the part-side) for Europe
and Asia.

On the SERG2009 the changed e.g. the mirrors and put standard
mirrors on it, etc...

Isn't that more of a motor vehicle dept regulation thing rather than HD?

No, it's not regulation, because you can buy the us-mirrors and put them on,
without any issues  8)

Must have something to do with the importing process to the country. HD would not make multiple versions for no reason since it costs them more money.

Not when they can get people in different regions wanting what the other region has...and making them pay too much $$ for the parts!

Why hell, if we all want to look like everyone else, then they are no longer custom!   :2vrolijk_21:

See, HD doing their best to make each bike unique.  Ha!
