SESG height vs. SEEG height
« on: August 23, 2011, 10:05:51 PM »

I sat on a 2005 SEEG in a showroom last week and noticed it was lower than my '11 SESG even with the C&C solo seat that I have on mine. Was the seat on the SEEG even lower or was the stock suspension lower on the 05 right from the factory? Does anybody know??

Standard height--OK....so I need to lower the front 1" to get close to that SEEG....Any recommendations on what to install?

Sounds like a thing for the winter project list.

It is my understanding that one of the features differentiating the SG / SESG from the Electra Glide / Ultra (excluding the 04/05 SEEG) is the lowered rear suspension. My SESG is equipped with the 12" premium ride hand adjustable shocks.

I think the biggest difference is the 09 - later frame sits taller than the earlier frame. My 11 SESG is a bit taller than the 02/08 SERKs. FWIW.

The rears are lowered in both the SESG and the 04/05 SEEG's.....at this point I am wondering if I can lower the front fo the SESG to match the SEEG.

I put these in an '01 RG.  Can't say enough good things about them.  The '01 FLTRSEI2 was already lowered so you can choose to lower 1 or 2 inches.  One (1) would effectively make it two inches lower than other RG models.  Might be the case with your model.  Not up on SGs at all but the product is top notch IMHO.

put in the progressive Monotube Cartridge's that are 1 inch lower and you're bike will handle
better and sit lower. The best part is they don't cost an arm and a leg, just an arm.  :huepfenlol2:

I guess I can get by with spending just an arm :huepfenlol2:

Twolanerider can contribute a finger and I can throw in part of a thumb if that will help. ;)

Before you go too far, you might want to verify that you don't already have a lowered front suspension.  If you look at the lowering kit Harley sells, it specifically excludes use on the FLHXSE/2/3 models.  That tends to be a tipoff that the forks are already lowered and using their kit won't lower it any further.  You can also look up the actual front fork parts and compare them to a standard eglide; I did that once and the springs weren't the same.  The regular Street Glide has the same front end as the FLHTC and FLHTCU, but the FLHXSE/2/3 does not.

He is good like that :huepfenlol2:

It seems you already did the parts research (thanks for that), so I am wondering if I should look at the aftermarket?  They probably won't distinguish between regular SG and CVO SG....so is this game over at this point?

Could be n/a with 19" front wheel? Lowering front end may cause triple tree to be to close to fender? Mo Co may not want to be exposed for damaged fenders?

Not necessarily, but I would suggest caution.  It's not a good idea to lower the front more than the rear from a handling standpoint, especially since Harley's already have a very steep rake angle.  The Progressive monotube kit could be used to lower the bike further (they offer 1" or 2" from standard I believe) if you really want to do it.

It would be nice if you could call and talk to a real CVO engineer who knows the full answer, but I have no idea how you would go about doing that.  The folks on the regular customer service phone lines would be very unlikely to have an answer, but you could give it a shot and see if they could forward your call to someone who should know.

The best approach if you just want to lower the seat height is a different seat.  Much better to give up a little seat thickness versus giving up ground clearance and handling, IMHO.

I'd verify in some way that the SESG front end is not already lowered an inch, but even if it's not, the 19" wheel/fender combo could very well be the reason the lowering kit is not recommended.  I guess you could verify that by measuring the distance from the middle of the front axle to some given point on the top end of the fork (like the cowbells), then comparing that measurement to a stock EG, or a SEUC with stock front end.  The stock front suspension dives so much, hitting the top of the fender is a real possibility, and that would be a pisser.  Plus, lowering the front end gives up 1" of suspension travel on a bike that already has limited travel to begin with.  IMO, that is an undesirable thing.  But, to each his or her own.  If the purpose is to get your feet flatter on the ground when stopped or parking the bike, lowering the seat height for that situation can be accomplished in several other ways, like having the seat modded, buying another seat, or installing a fully adjustable air ride suspension on the rear end that can be lowered when needed, the latter being the more expensive option, for sure.
