NIM
« on: September 10, 2011, 12:21:52 PM »

I know there are bits and pieces of posts where people are having problems with the NIM on their bikes.  But, it would be nice if there was a list of known issues with the factory installed NIM and the Roadtech Garmin units.  Mine is triggering the mic on my headset when it gives instructions from the GPS...not a problem when going slow, but a HUGE issue when at speed.  Before going to the dealer, I'd like to have some ammo to ensure them that the NIM needs to be replaced.  You know that they are not going to "just replace it with the new part" with just my word on the subject.  On top of that, I have the J&M headsets (the HD ones won't fit my helmets), so they might try and blame it on those, which of course is BS.

They will replace it if it is under warranty. Just tell them what it is doing. It is NOT supposed to trigger the mic or trigger when listening to XM, MP3 songs or with a phone call via the GPS. Harley knows there are bad ones. I would say that all the old versions are bad and they will act up sooner or later.
If the dealer does not want to replace it call Harley and they will.

I have a 2011 SEUC and was having problems with mp3 music from the gps cutting off from time to time, even though gps was not being used  simultaneously for directions. Had the new module installed and local dealership had not received any info from hd so they did not know if they could do the replacement under warranty or not. I called customer service who put me on hold while they called  dealership. After talking to dealership customer service said it would be covered under warranty. So other than having to call customer service because hd is not advising dealers of the problem, it was not really an issue to get the new module covered as a warranty replacement item. Good luck.

I just had the "A" version installed on Saturday (the 10th) and all my issues have disappeared so far. Get a nav message and when it is don telling me when to turn goes right back to the radio. I love it now. Wish I could figure ou where and how to mount the XM puck so I could remove it from the bike and use it in the car too.

Jim, Mine is doing this and I am wondering how I can tell if the NIM is the old version. Where can I look? Is the P/N on the NIM unit itself?

Thanks,
Bob~

Mine does the same thing.  Been to the selling dealer and they claim they have talked to Mother Harley.  They claim that it was designed this way.....
Guess I need to call Harley.  Also have same headsets.

The NIM is not designed to trigger the microphone nor is it designed to falsely trigger by playing MP3 music. If yours is doing this then it is defective and should be covered by the warranty.

The new NIM part # ends with (11A). The dealers should not have any old ones left in their inventory by now.

I got mine replaced with no problem shortly after my original post on this subject.  Has worked fine ever since, other than I had to have the Roadtech 660 replaced as well...did not let the dealer do that, but contacted Garmin directly and they sent me a "new" unit.  Has worked fine since.

Chances are good that on your 11 bike, it has the bad version.  As mentioned, the new version has a "A" on the end of the part number.  Most dealers don't know WTF a NIM is, much less how it works.  Depending on what dipchit they talked to at the mothership (if they actually talked to anyone at all), they may not have a clue how it works either.

I'll try again, they have a new service writer.  Have to take it in for some peeling chrome under the derby cover, to see if Mother harley wants to cover it.

Thanks for the info.

Jim, sorry to bother you. I have a complete NIM system coming to change out the one on my 2012 CVO. That is giving me the same problem as above guys are talking about. question is, do I have to change out the entire wiring harness or is it OK to just change out the module?
THANKS

Just the module of course this assumes that the wiring is good.

I got mine replaced yesterday..

When I first described the problem, they wanted to bring the bike in and duplicate the problem before ordering the part (not in stock). Then I explained that it is a well known problem by Harley customer service "NIM False Triggering" on the early 2011 CVO SEUC and I could have them give you a call or I could work directly with your mechanic to duplicate the problem... they quickly changed their tune and started calling me Mr. (my last name) and ordered the part without verifying the issue was present. When the part came in, it was schedule and was in and out before lunch.

I couldn't be happier..

Just a heads up on the supposedly new NIM fixing the false triggering issue. I have had dozens of people calling me over the past month or so telling me that even the new NIM will do the same thing as the old one with one exception so far. That exception is that the new NIM does not seam to falsely trigger when playing MP3 song via the GPS but it will trigger the microphone when a turn prompt is present so it looks like you can still have a bad NIM even though it has the "A" in the part #.

The mic has aways been hot during the turn prompt.. I don't see that as a problem as it has always been that way. I sometimes speak to my wife during the turn prompt, I don't have to raise my voice to activate the VOX. I always thought it utilized the intercom talk path for the NIM.

That is if I understand you correctly...
