Intercom PTT problem?
« on: September 18, 2011, 08:26:24 AM »

Wife and I went for a lunch ride yesterday and was using the PTT switch unstead of the VOX for talking between the two of us. INT on the radio was turned OFF.
Meet up with another couple and went to VOX, INT was turned ON and VOX adjusted properly, so we could use the PTT for the CB.
On the way home, turned the CB OFF, INT OFF and was going to use the PTT again, only now it's not working. Played with it for a while and it now only works when the INT is turned ON.
I've checked all the settings, even checked the software to make sure it was correct.
Can't get the PTT to work unless the VOX is on.
Any ideas?

I may be reading this wrong...and what a surprise that would b...but you seem to be stating that you cant communicate with the intercom if it's turned off???

Correct. Until Saturday, with the intercom turned off, we could use the PTT and talk with each other. Now the only way to communicate is turn the INT on, adjust the VOX sensitivity and use it, or adjust the VOX all the way down, until it says "closed" and then the PTT works.

I'm thinking that is the way it was designed to work.
At least that's how mine works.

intercom has to be on or cb on for mine to work.............vox only takes place of the ptt switch, but we never use that, just the ptt switchs.

PTT switch works when the VOX is on or off...think of it as an "override"... when the Intercom is ON.  With CB ON, you can talk via VOX to your passenger/driver...if you use the PTT switch with the CB ON, everybody within range can hear your conversation...if you want to keep it private, you must use VOX.

Well, this not being my first touring Harley, I'm still kinda confused.
Both Ultras I've owned, '03 and '05, several touring I've rented, Ultras and Road Glides, all worked the same way.
With the INT turned OFF and the CB turned OFF, the PTT would open the intercom. Once you turned on the INT and adjusted the VOX so it would open properly then the VOX would work, and you could still use the PTT. If you had the CB on, anytime you used the PTT, it would transmit.
This is the first 2011, all the ones I've owned and rented were 2009 and older, so could they have changed how it works?

Page 128 in the FLTRUSE owner's manual states, "To speak over the intercom, press and hold either rider or passenger PTT switch to enable the microphones. Both microphones are active while one or both PTT switches are pressed." It then goes on the explain "Activating the intercom and the VOX microphones".

I need to go to the dealer and check out some of the bikes there.
