Swirling Noise From Primary Area When In Neutral.
« on: September 25, 2011, 01:59:34 PM »

Anyone know what the fairly loud swirling noise is that comes from the primary housing when bike is in neutral?  Noise goes away once bike is placed into gear .  I started noticing it when shifting into neutral at a traffic light to rest my clutch hand. I have a 2008 CVO Ultra with 26,000 miles.
Thanks for any info prior to taking it to stealer.

Check the bearing in the inner primary. Second one I've heard of in the last week.  >:(

YUP, it is your IPB.
When in neutral, put the bike in gear and the noise goes away.
I replaced both my 07 SE Ultra one and my 06 Street Bob one
with the baker one piece bearing kit. About $40 each.
Extremely happy now.

Both were worn the heck out with lots of scoring on them.

These days all the various noises coming from the cheap designs and cheaper parts are NORMAL.  Just ask the folks at H-D.

The inner primary bearing has been problematic since the introduction of the Cruise Drive and new style primary in 2006 (Dyna)/2007, so I would assume that most Harley dealers should be familiar with the problem.  If you have an ESP it should be covered.  If not, you may want to research alternatives from folks like Baker before just paying to have another Harley bearing installed.

"NORMAL" is definitely the most popular factory term for engine noise

Thanks.  I will go for the IPB and hope that they have had experience.  I do have an ESP, thank goodness.  Maybe I should go for the upgraded Compensator while they are in there since it has been knocking around on occasion. What part number do I need for SC compensator?  My ride is a 2008 and I understand they improved them later.  True?

The latest SE Compensator Kit part number is 40274-08A.  Make sure you get the latest version with the "A" suffix.

Jerry

I just got a call regarding my IP noise which set me to doing a search here. Let me back up just a bit if you all have a minute...

I have had my bike for 13 months now. Purchased new 2012, RG Ultra. I won't bore you with all of the details but it has been in the shop for various things about 9 times now counting this one. I usually put 15k miles a year on my bikes on average, this one only has 6700 due to the shop time. My dealer, 120 miles away not local, really bends over to try and accommodate. They have driven to my house with a trailer 6 of those dealer trips to get my bike.

One week ago I rode my bike down to them so they could replace some painted parts for me under warranty. When I got there and they were checking me in, they found there was a rear shifter linkage oil seal leak. They replaced it under warranty and asked if I wanted to replace the inner with a chrome inner. Absolutely I said. Thanks for asking. All the work was completed and I rode home. Everything was fine. Then 3 days later my wife and I rode to some relatives about 45 miles away. When we got back into town, I noticed the bike seemed to be making more noise than usual. I got home and sure enough, the rattling was coming from the inner primary. When in neutral, it will rattle until the clutch is pulled in then it stops.

I sent an email and asked if they could pick it up. They sent a truck and trailer Saturday morning to get it. My service writer  took it for a long ride today and we just got of the phone. He said he couldn't really here anything until the service tech pointed it out to him. He said he was going to have the tech pull it back apart and check, but the noise was something Moco referred to as "normal" (something about something "loading up").

I was actually looking for something on the compensator sprocket issue when I came across this thread. Does this sound like the same bearing issue?

Thanks for letting me butt in!  :drink:

Rob -in addition to compensator issues it has been my experience that the chain adjuster is finicky and can also make a "normal" HD noise. FWIW

The swirling noise I am experiencing is coming from the clutch end of the primary.  It is not a rattle but a swirling sound when bike is placed in nutreal.  It seemed to start overnight.  My dealer must have replaced a bunch of bearings since they knew exactly what I was referring to when I spoke to them over the phone. Taking it in as soon as I receive my updated compensator from a discount dealer to be installed at the same time.

Well the bottom line was nothing was done but to add Red Line fluid to the primary. It was pulled down and all was "normal" according to MOCO or dealer definition (not mine).

It supposedly stopped the rattle noise. I cannot verify as I haven't been able to ride since it's return on Thursday due to work and weather....oh, and because I spent yesterday riding down to Tampa where they had a 2012 BMW K1600 GTL demo in the only color I wanted to see...blue...and ride....did I mention I'm getting tired of this chit??  :drink:

OK, Rob...so how did you like it?  I've heard awesome things about it.  Should we ask Carnac?
