WIRING HARNESS ISSUES
« on: September 29, 2011, 11:51:17 AM »

I recently purchased a a 2012 CVO SG and experienced issues with the ipod and speaker system. I just found out that the factory failed to protect the harness from making contact with the rear tire which resulted in shredding the harness. Please ask the dealer to inspect your harness.

Wow my iPod quit working at 277 miles. They have replaced the head unit and now have ordered a new iPod interface trying to figure out the problem. Meanwhile I haven't had my iPod up and running for over a month now while waiting for parts. I would be willing to bet I have the same problem. In the morning I will take off my bags to see

So after reading this I can't sleep so at 1:00 am I'm out taking off the right bag and sure enough I find that my wiring harness looks exactly like the picture you posted. So now I'm completely irritated :soapbox:

First basic rule in troubleshooting  LOOK AT ALL COMPONENTS FOR AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM
Just goes to show you how even trained techs can overlook a simple problem because of overthinking!!!!!  Most likely there is or soon will be a service bulletin out warning service managers and techs to inspect units for this problem when they are in for any service.  Your bike will be repaired under warranty, BUT HD warranty will not pay the dealer any parts or labor for work completed on your bike prior to the harness issue. Its a big big mistake by the tech and I bet there will be some ass chewin because of it.
Lots of left bags will be removed today and eyeballs will be on the Ipod harness!!
Thanks for the heads up Delaney

Got mine back from the dealer yesturday... He believes that the LED installer had moved my iPod harness. I showed him the pics and sugessted he speak with the MOCO about this. After three bike here on the post I would say this is a problem. I smelled (and the others riding with me) electrical burning but couldn't pin point it until the iPod died.  So wouldn't be surprised if we saw some wiring harness fires due to this.

Just checked mine and it was close but not hitting yet. Probably would be in a few hundred miles as it gets more pliable. 5 cens wire tie and good to go!
Gotta love this site. Thanks for the aspirin......... :drink:

Neal and the site should get a royality each time the membership identifies the root cause - and educates dealer techs - of recurring issues such as this...   :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3: :huepfenjump3:
