Security, locking your bike
« on: June 17, 2006, 07:24:44 PM »

Anyone have any experience with cable or chain locks for locking up your bike.  I am looking at the Abus chain locks. A Chapter member got his bike stolen parked in front of a Church when taking the tour up in Canada last week.  Thanks

About 10 years ago a buddy of mine had his FXR stolen out of the garage in his condo. He had Cobra Links running through the frame to one of those big metal loop things bolted to the concrete floor. The bike was sandwiched in between the wall of the garage, and the front of his car. There were cars parked on both sides, pinning it in.

It was stolen anyway. If they want it, they will get it.

Man, it just totally makes my blood boil to read this. I guess you are right Ironhorse, if they want it...they will get it.

Another good reason for top notch insurance, photos, and excellant records.

Mine has Lojack installed, They may throw it on a blanket and carry it off but it will be recovered a lot quicker than those who have taken it might think. ;)

VAZHOG,
Where did you get the Lojack and what did it cost you????  I've heard that they make them for bikes (and considering that a friends bike ((a peace officers special none the less......takes a really big pair to grab one of those)) was just lost),  I'd like to get a little security for my cherry bomb.

I had heard about LoJack, but also that the service wasn't available in all areas. Has that changed, and they now can provide nationwide service?

BTW - Here is there website Lojack. Haven't read the fine print yet to determine if they have gone nationwide.

It was Dealer installed http://www.hdofdanbury.com/ And I logged on to the Lojack Website and Regesitered my Vin #- There was no exxtra charge at the time of sale - None on the Bill of sale and I didnot pay over MSRP. Lojack makes money on selling other services.  None of which I signed up for.

Maybe I could have stated this better. This is from there website and was my concern....

The LoJack Stolen Vehicle Recovery System is a silent tracking device hidden in your vehicle that is automatically activated by the police when you report your vehicle stolen and enables the Police to track and recover your vehicle.

If the Police in your area don't have the ability to activate the tracking device then the system is no good. I don't believe any of my local law enforcement agencies have the ability to activate the tracking device at this time. I would like to know how many localities have this ability to activate the tracking device before I would purchase this product.

But as you stated....

"Still it won't stop anyone from taking it That really wants to-So don't worry be happy-They make new stuff every day  ;D"

Locks/anti-theft devices are for "honest" people and only slow down thieves. The more you can slow down thieves, and make them go by your bike to something that is an "easier picking" then you can sleep better at night. [smiley=sleeping.gif]

I'm Sure the local culpeper police don't have the ability to track it, However armed with your police report you can report to Lojack they arm the system and if it's not taken to a chop shop in culpeper, Which most likley won't be the case it will show up on the lojack police data base- Hence the recovery warrenty as stated on the web site. This is my first (lojack) So Like anything else we shall see. No one plans on having anything stolen so it(lojack) is just another deterant for Honest people.

I'm sure there recovey warrenty is a good as the HD warrenty from the MOCO  :D

Just put a Honda cover on it...that oughta keep somebody from wanting to steal it.  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif] Seriously, I have the HD security system with the siren, and when I have to park it for any length of time, such as at a hotel, I just put a Dowco (generic) cover on it.  No problems.....so far. I am in a high volume market for bikes, here in Los Angeles. The bad guys are plentiful, the good guys asleep. I have two rides as many others on this site. When I need to go away for a day, a week, whatever; I always get panic stricken and padlock the garage, cable lock both bikes: together and seperately to the ground, attach the "Bulldog disc brake locks", set the bike alarms (both) and the garage alarm. I am not paranoid, I am used to it by now.

I remember the days when we bikers were the bad guys, now only to be reduced to the status of potential "Victim".

So after 20 minutes of security, and facing the 5 D's of "they wont steal my ride" (denial, denial, denial, denial, denial) I am finally able to take off.

LoJack is an "apre-sale", aftermarket closer sale and yet it has no chrome. What do I need that for?

The real deterrent is the sign outside the garage that states: Protected by Smith and Wesson. Acutally, mines a Barretta .9, but ya all get my drift.

What others have said about "If they want it bad enough they will find a way" is true. The idea is you do all you can to prevent it or slow it down. Having a pager type alarm system can help give you some piece of mind if you are in range and can respond in a timely manner.
The OCD many have on this site can work against us. The fancier and more attractive you make your bike the more it attracts the bad guys too. The idea of covering it up with a Honda or just a plain cover is a good idea.So is trying to enter and leave an area in as quiet and plain manner will help. You don't know what will be attractive to thieves, the monster sounding motor when you do burnouts or the thumping loud stereo or maybe both etc.
What some have said about LOJACK is true. In many areas of the country there are no Police reciever units so it is of NO use. The trick is to check with the local police and see if they have units equiped with recievers. That may work if you stay within a certain area but if you plan to travel you need to check in that area too.
The problem that can develop is the range of the locators is limited so coverage is not that far then you have to depend on that police car being in use after the system is activated and that it is manned by an officer trained in locating the stolen vehicle.(It is like a directional finder.) If that police car is in the garage for repairs or out-of-service due to officer being in court etc. Then no one gets the signal that the stolen vehicle is nearby.
In larger departments where you may have 30 -40 cars on the street at any time there may only be 3 or 4 police units with the recievers.
Viper Alarms has a neat GPS alarm system that works like Onstar for GM cars and trucks but I don't know if it could be used on a motorcycle? That system would allow you to track you vehicle anywhere in the world and it pages you on your cellphone or home computer if the alarm goes off. That way you don't have to worry about the range of your pager either. With the Viper GPS you could also follow it on your computer and see exactly where it is and you can decide to deactivate the vehicle and keep it from starting.
As a parent it would allow you to track your teenage driver (Or spouse) and see where they went as well as getting reports of speeding etc. too.
The downside is there is a monthly fee for the Viper GPS service.

I've had several friends have their bikes stolen, a heartbreaking experience.  Both times it was at a restaurant that folks in our club have been to many times.  You just never know when someone is going to try and take it.  I started using a a chain, that lasted about 2 rides, too much effort.  I tried the disk brake, again too much effort.  I've opted for the siren/pager/9mm (Sig Sauer to be exact).  No trouble or effort to hit the button & arm the alarm.

I can tell you that about 4 weeks ago we did Sunday morning breakfast ride, pager went off and I flew out of the restaurant,  I never said a word but I came up on my bike with a speed and intensity that I think the guy who set off the alarm chit his pants. Turned out to be a over exhuberant rider trying to the SE to a buddy.  I guess it helped that 3 of my friends were right behind me, I think between the 4 four of us we avg about 6'4 and 220 lbs.   Needless to say, I like the pager  8-)
