CB transmit problem
« on: June 18, 2006, 07:03:25 PM »

Just got back from 3k+ road trip and my buds tell me my cb sucks.  Problem is that when I transmit it practically blows the helmet off their heads.  They say it sounds like a trucker with a linear amp.  Volume is about twice normal and so loud my speech is garbled.  These guys were on '99 Ultra and '01 Wing (yeah, we let him tag along - we have had sensitivity training you know).  HD customer service says take it to dealer to be checked out, etc, etc.  Did confirm no adjustments I can make to transmit function (can they with digital technician?).  This is on my CUSE with the '06 HK radio.

Thought I'd ask the experts before I took it in.  Thanks in advance.

I have heard of that problem and that there is a "Module" that they can install on your CB so you can transmit OK. I plan to test mine out soon myself so I don't know yet if I need to take mine in too. As I understand it may only be on the early 2006 model year CBs but I have not seen anything offical.

There's a problem with most, seemingly not all, of the 2006 CBs, UltraFXR.  Have a look at this thread, and the others it points to:

http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1132341485

Communication 06 to 06 seems to be OK, but not 06 to anything else.

The supposed "fix" that CVOinLV was told was coming sure is taking a long time!   :-/

Sorry for the delay but my bike was totaled several weeks ago just as the dealer told me that had a fix.  It turns out that they ordered a new CB module and was ready to install it.  So what the dealer told me originally about some new part being made for our bikes did not materialize.

Bike totaled?? Hope you are doing all right. I don't remember there being a thread about this (may be a CRS thing at the moment). Let us know if we can do anything.

Latest from my dealer:

"I have however had word back from Harley regarding the connectivity between 05 radios and the 06 Harmon Kardon models. Harley have told us that they are aware of the incompatibility and realise it would be nice to have it. It should be noted that this change in specification is not a fault, it is effect of changing over to this new radio supplier. It will not receive priority over other issues however and Harley have asked us to make sure that you are aware of that. "

That has me blazing mad, and I'm not nice when I get mad.

Last Thursday I loaded the newest software update v 8.9.0 for our Harmon Karon radios.  On a HOG club ride Saturday I checked with several folks and they all reported that my CB sounded OK.  So perhaps (who knows) this latest update had some effect on the CB transmit problem.

That's the biggest bunch of bull since a few beads and other trinkets got traded for Long Island.  The issue isn't connectivity of one year model to the next.  It is connectivity of CB to CB with a newly released device not being at a proper specification to match legacy hardware.  They can say it is not a fault.  Then can call it an "06 Special Feature" if they want.  It's still a screw up.  To attempt to avoid the fact of the problem by saying it doesn't exist is, well; I started to say insulting.  But in fact it's just Harley......

Because of the OSA Downing Street can say Big Ben doesn't exist either.  We can still see it though.

Spot on TwoLane. They advertise it as a CB radio.  There are official, standard, frequencies for CB Radios, and if it uses those, it MUST be able to communicate with all other CB Radios. If it can't, then it is misrepresented in law, and I for one am not going to sit back like the moron they think I am from that puerile answer. That is illegal in the UK, and I think I'll now get my lawyer on the case.

Damn, I watched the site daily for a month for updates after CVOinLV said he'd been told one was due!   Just when I take my eye off the ball, they post one.... Wish I'd had it before I went off the the European HOG rally last week - just back yesterday. Lack of a CB was terrible. I'll try it tonight, but of course I've got nobody to test the CB with till next time I'm out.  Maybe it'll make my BlueTooth work though!

I was at the dealer today trying to get the v.8.9 radio software download since I was having trouble on my own. I found out the dealer only had v.7.8 and will be ordering v.8.9 and downloading it for me later.
I hope it fixes my CB radio issue as well. My problem is I can hear others but I am not transmitting at all. I also have the shorty antennas from Freedom Cycle and don't have access to an SWR meter to check the output. Others I ride with do not have any problems in transmitting or recieving and they never used a meter to tune the antennas. They do have older bikes though.
The dealer was not familiar with v.8.9 and had not heard that it was a fix for the CB. He said he has fixed one other 2006 CB and had to swap out a module in the faring to get it to work. He stated it was a situation that the 2006 CB was so strong it would overpower older radios.
I hope ultrafxr is right and all I need is the v.8.9 download to fix the CB. ;D

If your not transmitting at all it's likely the module on yours also.....
