Heated Grips Revisited
« on: October 25, 2011, 01:55:24 PM »

I started a post awhile back when my heated grips stopped working.  I've searched this site and have found that mine is not an isolated case, but rather, many have given up on the H-D grips and have opted for the Heat Demons.  This weekend I experienced what at least one other forum member has when I turned on the grips for the hell of it and was surprised to find that they worked again.  Well, my jubilation was short lived because they are not working again.  I should have left them on when they were working, but instead I turned them off when I got home.  Since then, I have tried them on different settings, but to no avail--they just won't heat up.  Has anyone else experienced this "working--not working" phenomenon, and if so, have you found out what the problem is?  I have to think it is either a loose wire or a short causing it.  Some have suggested that dampness causes rust to form on the rheostat contacts.  And a final question I have is, if the rheostat control is the problem, can it be replaced without replacing the entire set, i.e. both grips and wiring?  I'm hoping that I can salvage the grips and just replace what needs to be replaced.  Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Having had a set fail on my '06 SEUC, and replacing them with Heat Demons, I did not see a way to replace/rebuild the left grip which contains the rheostat.  The aggravation factor alone of pulling the grips for a repair makes it more trouble than it's worth, IMO.  You can purchase non-heated grips to match...do the Heat Demons and be done with it.  That's my opinion, at any rate.

In theory, the actual grips should be available individually, as noted in the attachment I liberated from the installation instructions for the kit.  However, when I put any of the individual numbers for a left hand grip into one of my online parts stores, the number comes up as "not found".  I guess you could check with your local dealer, perhaps the individual part numbers have changed from what is published in the instruction sheets.

Of course, I think the other guys are giving you the best answer.  Cut your losses with the Harley parts and go with a proven product from the aftermarket.

My take is that I don't want the dealership monkeys f'ing around with all the wires inside the bars, so I did the Heat Demons myself.  Then I've got nobody to blame but me.

Sorry if I missed something, but did you also put the Demons on your new bike?
Just wondering, as my stock are failing and I am trying to decide what to do this winter, they are still under warranty, but really never did give off much heat.
I will be using my heated gloves soon.
Please advise, and thanks.

Dave, The heated grips/ Heat Demons are great for the PA weather we're having right now. No gloves needed. My 09 SERG did not come with them. I had a Indy shop install them. Plus if you look up heated grips on this sites search, you'll pretty much see the H.D.s version suck. To put it bluntly. The heated gloves are great for I.M.H.O. 50 degree's and cooler. Believe me I love my Gerbing gloves and liners. But as long as your warranty covers the grips let H.D. fix them..................Fuzz

Dave...no, not on the new bike...yet.  I might let them replace 1 set on this bike, if they go bad, just because I have nothing "in there" that I care too much about them messing with.  If the second set quits, I'll do the Heat Demons on my dime and get it over with.

I had messed around with the bars, wiring, etc. on my '06, so only I knew exactly what could be messed up by some richard head mechanic.

Thanks for the heads up, I sort of want them to replace the first pair (ON THEM).
It somehow gives me a warm feeling inside, but when they fail again I am def. going with the Demons.

Makes me kinda' warm and fuzzy too, Dave.  Everybody else seems to be able to make heated grips that actually work/last, but nooooooooooo, not HD.   :huepfenlol2:

I had heard there were issues with the heat demons and the TBW. Maybe this was only on Wild 1 bars.

I have traded out bars a number of times in the past and always installed grip heaters from Aerostich. These are a mylar element that is designed to wrap around the outside of the bar and under the grip. I have had good luck rolling them and inserting them into the bar. I plan on putting bagger apes on my SESG soon and will likely be going this way again. The nice thing is they are only about $40.

Funny you mentioned this as mine stopped working, then magically last fall they worked again for the remainder of the season. Come spring to present, they won't work again.

Has anyone ever figured out exactly what goes bad? Is it the rheostat? Anyone have an old left grip that's bad and is willing to donate it for research? There's got to be a way to disassemble these things?

always installed grip heaters from Aerostich.

Hadn't seen that product before.  Assuming the reliability isn't a question certainly looks like a simple install.  And it's hard to argue with the $29 price tag at the link below.

The Heat Demon kits do cost more.  They're likely a bit more trouble to install also.  But damn that little switch of theirs looks so much better...
