FLHTCUSE2 Tour Pak Missing, but Amp Still Mounted. What do I do?
« on: November 05, 2011, 02:28:16 AM »

Hi guys,

I purchased this bike recently, and the tour pak was stolen off it. I'm looking for a replacement. What should I do?  Would you buy a CVO replacement, or would you buy a hard shell tour pak with speakers and adjustable back for the BSP?  Which model years would fit?

However, I don't know what to do after I get the replacement.  This is my first FLHTCU (I own a 97 Road King).

I found this thread here: http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=34824.0

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I'm looking to buy a tour pak and hook up the rear speakers for my stereo, CB and intercom. I'd like to get her back to stock.

I found threads on this forum about moving the tour pak back by using an aftermarket mount that will allow me to shift the tour pak back 1-2".

Thanks,
Mark

It will fit. All King Tour Paks are exactly the same box. The "Road Glide" Tour Pak is just painted in Road Glide colors, and has the light bar installed. I bought a brand new 2006 Road Glide Tour Pak from a dealer on the internet a few years back for our '95 Evo FLHTP for a song. The only box change to the Tour Pak was in 2006 when they came out with the new lid - but the base box didn't change. They all have the same mounting holes on the bottom to fit the detachable or fixed racks, and the speaker boxes are the same - except the Ultra speaker boxes have the push-to-talk switch on them... the Road Glide speaker pods may not have that switch, since only the Ultras have the intercom. I used the Dragonfly Concepts speaker pods on mine with their 6 1/2" Kenwood speakers - so I don't know about the Road Glide speaker pods.

Mark, the 2011 Tour Pak will "fit" your bike, except that you will need to drill new holes in the bottom of the TP to mount the TP on the OEM permanent TP mount, or a detachable TP rack; the hole pattern for mounting the TP changed to accommodate the -09 and newer frame and accompanying TP mounting system.

Also, the connectors for the speakers and passenger controls at the speaker pods are different; Molex on the 2011 and Deutsch on your bike.  It's not a big deal to change the connectors and wire terminals.

Another difference will be the CB antenna.  Until '08 or so, HD used a loading coil in the TP for the CB antenna; '08 or so newer models no longer use the loading coil mounted in the TP.  If you buy an '08 or newer TP built with the CB antenna (e.g. from an EG or RG Ultra) you should expect to use a CB antenna for an -08 or newer model.  Alternatively, you can use the J&M in-fairing CB antenna which is what I use and it's satisfactory for group riding.

HD changed from fiberglass to plastic TP's in '06 or so, and when they did they changed to bottom of the tour pak from a heavily molded bottom to an essentially flat bottom; the '09 and newer TP's retain this essentially flat bottom, but changed the mounting holes as mentioned previously.

If you go with the regular Ultra TP, you'll probably want it color-matched to the bike; you'll need a painter who has experience matching CVO paint or one prepared to do some work to match your bike since the CVO colors are not available from HD.

As for whether to get an OEM leather TP or not, the regular King TP's are larger and hold more.  Also, the speaker pods used on the '06 and '07 CVO Ultras are slightly in shape from those used on the King TP's and have (IIRC) different mounting hole patterns.

Good luck with your research and choice.

Carl,

Thanks for the informative post.

Good news:
A) I found a black 2011 RG King TP with speakers ($600), but the speaker cables have been cut which actually probably helps me because I needed to switch the connectors anyway (as you described from Molex to Deutch).
B) I also found a 2007 CVO TP ($400), but it is missing the speaker pods. Go figure.

Bad news:
A) I have no idea how to mount Deutch (or Mollex for that matter) connectors onto cables, and I don't know how to drill more holes into a TP than are already there.  Maybe this is easier for some people than for me.
B) I have no idea which speaker kit I need because of the differences between the King TP and the original CVO TP.

Questions:
A) Is there a guide I can follow to install the Deutch connectors for the RG King TP?  Is this a very difficult job?  Is there a template somewhere to mark where the holes need to be drilled in the newer TP?  How about a list of hardware that I would need to mount the newer TP to the OEM rack?
B) How can I find the correct speaker kit for the CVO TP? If it's like everything else I found for the CVO, it is probably 4 times the price of the "regular" speaker pod kit.

I don't mind spending some time to mount the RG King TP, especially if the speaker kit for the CVO is really expensive.

On one hand, I'd like to keep the bike as stock as possible, and I like the leather with the CVO badge.  Very unique.

On the other hand, the King TP (as long as the intercom works) would be nice with the additional storage room and I'd be less concerned about riding in the elements.  I've read a number of people converting from the leather to a hardshell case.

Like you said, I've to got to make a decision and pretty soon.  Thanks again.

NGH,

Thanks for your post. I'm going to do some more research about the Dragonfly Concepts speaker pods.

Regards,
Mark

They are $200 and are made of fiberglass with vinyl covers. I can take a few snapshots of the ones on the Evo and post here if you are interested. They have no switches on them at all, so there is no provision for passenger volume control, PTT, etc like on the H-D pods. They are also shaped differently from the H-D pods, and have a slicker and thinner. Can't remember how much the Kenwoods were, but they are on the Dragonfly Concepts website. They deliver better sound than the stock H-S speakers, I think.

Given the kind of project you're considering, go ahead and purchase the HD Service Manual Supplement for the FLHTCUSE2--it will have wiring diagrams needed for the tour pak speaker pods' wiring.  They show up in the classifieds here from time to time, as well as on Ebay.

Likewise, the appendix in the HD Touring Service Manual has useful information on assembling the connectors.  You can also find useful information by Googling Deutsch connectors.

Any HD store can supply you with the connectors you'll need using the FLHTCUSE2 parts book (ditto p/n's for tour pak pods, etc.); and, you can find the connectors from on-line vendors, e.g. Batts Racing.

A useful, though occasionally imperfect, on-line source for parts diagrams and p/n's is ths HD dealer:

http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche.com/ronnies/hdm_oem/hdmc.asp

Just go to check-out and you'll get HD p/n's; you won't buy anything when doing so.

If you're patient, you'll see complete tour pak's for your bike on ebay; and, you can try the "want to buy" in the classifieds here.

Carl,

You wrote the HD pod speakers for the CVO TP:
Also, the speaker pods used on the '06 and '07 CVO Ultras are slightly in shape from those used on the King TP's and have (IIRC) different mounting hole patterns.

Does this mean I can't purchase "regular" speaker pods like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Harley-Davidson-FLHTC-Tour-Pak-Rear-Speakers-/230695292293?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item35b682cd85

If not, then what speaker pods do I need to purchase? I want the side controls for the BSR.

How "big" of a difference is there?

Mark

Mark, shoot a PM to member Chains--he had the OEM tour pak on his '06 CVO Ultra and replaced it with the King TP.  He should be able to answer your questions regarding the different pod versions and fitment.

For example, I don't know if the mounting holes on the regular TP pods will line-up with the pre-drilled holes in the premium leather tour pak used on your bike.

Also, another difference between the two pod versions is that on the regular TP pods, the passenger headset connector is separate from the pods; on your OEM pods for the premium leather tour pak the passenger headset connector is mounted in the left side pod.

As mentioned, send Chains a PM; I'm sure he can answer most, if not all, of your questions.

Carl,

Thanks, I'm on it.

I'd prefer to use the leather CVO TP as long as I can use the regular speaker pods and not lose the intercom connectivity or any functionality for that matter.

Next on my list, rear passenger floorboards.  But, I'll save that for another day!

Thanks again for your and NGH's help.   :2vrolijk_21:

Dood I just got my bike last month and I'm about to spend over 500 bux to remove the tp.  The thing is great when the wifey is on but other than that it's just dead weight.

Sure it's nice to have but I love the way the bike handles without it.  They should come from the factory with a quick detach kit.

If it was me I would take the amp off and ride without the tp.  Then you can put all the details of the quick detach setup together at your leisure.

My tp sat in the garage collecting dust 90% of the time.

I hear ya, but my wifey wants to go for a ride on my new toy and the best way for me to continue to reinforce her sincere position that I should buy whatever I want to be happy, is well, to make her happy.  Sometimes the trip up the mountain makes the trip down the mountain more fulfilling.

Feel like selling me your TP?   :huepfenlol2:

Sledge, holy crap!  You're like your own parts department.

The items I left in your quote are the items that I'd have interest in, though the most interest is in the TP and the passenger floor boards.  Are those adjustable floorboards by any chance?

Thanks!
