Really! I mean REALLY!!
« on: November 22, 2011, 10:42:36 PM »

:smash:  I imagine we all know it should take about 5 - 10 minutes to R&R an air cleaner filter element.  But I guess on a brand new H-D FLHXSE3 there has to be some factory added difficulty  :veryangry:  I don't know what they're using for thread locking compound on the air cleaner element screws and badge screws, but it must be equivalent to Loctite Red.

 :drink: Cooling down now....

So I wanted to replace the paper element from the factory with the SE/K&N high flow element, should be quick and easy...  I guess I should of got the hint when the bung that the air cleaner badge screw threads into popped off of the back of the air cleaner cover, and quit right there.  But, being a DIY until I get in trouble type of guy, I decided to dig further and finish the task.  I removed the air cleaner cover, and began to remove the air filter element,... boy, these things are tight, this is a lot more than 55 inch pounds, jeez, the torx head is stripping out of this screw... :furious:  aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhhhh

OK, i get the filter elemt off, and it still has the air filter support posts attached to the fasteners, and there ain't no gettin them off without stripping the torx cap screws.. I'm done :(

So I button everything back together, cause Thunder Mountain HD is coming tomorrow to pick up the bike and install a SE Race Tuner and Dyno.  I put the SE/K&N filter in the right saddlebag and I'm gonna call Micah, the service Manager tomorrow morning and have them install the damn thing, they'll know exactly what I'm talking about once they try to unbutton that air cleaner :evil3:

I had a similar problem with my primary cover. Stripped the torx head caps out on 4 out of 5. Ended up having to drill them and tap them to get em off.I had already drained the primary oil on its first change at 1600 km. pretty upsetting.

I had that happen to me once....only 2 bolts though.....after that time I always break loose the bolts before draining the fluid. If the bike is level, no oil comes out of the clutch cover anyway since it's not filled that high so no worries about making a mess.

And--of course--don't make them gorilla tight when putting them, back.

I once stripped a couple screw heads on an automotive throttle body, ever since I've put a bit adapter on an impact screwdriver. If the torx head gives the slightest resistance I use it. One or two light taps and its free. Used it for primary and for rotors on my bike. Saved me plenty of aggravation.

Been using a hand impact driver since the early 70's. Was the only way to take my Honda apart without buggering up all the Phillip heads.

Even the cheap ones from the flea markets or discount tool outlets work well for the ocausional use.  I use a cheap one for work, the bits will break but you can get good bits from craftsman, snap-on ect. so you dont have to spend big bucks on a tool that sits in your tool box. jmo

I remember working on old british bikes using my oldest screwdrivers and hammering on the handle ends while applying torque, I've got the same impact driver shown in a previous post these days for the same effect.

Thanks for mentioning this. I was thinking the same way. I think i paid like $10 at Autozone.
I discovered that I can use a 3/8" Drive Torx etc etc with it.

I had the same problem on my primary cover. I had to drill one of the torx heads out to get it off. Before I put it back together I replaced the torx with button head allen screws.....I hate torx bolts.

My derby is already drilled and tapped with 1/4" stainless inserts. Did that about the second or third oil change.
