Hey Spyder, thanks for the interest. It was actually called the "Heritage Edition"; it is written in gold lettering on the front fender. It is the first "Heritage" that Harley put out. Just as the 1971 Superglide was young (at the time) Willie G's first custom, it was Willie G's project to bring out a commemorative Heritage bike. They made it in only one color combo; olive drab and burnt orange. This is the color combo you see on the old, old originals in the early 1900's. The paint scheme is basically that of the 1964 FLH. It is one of those paint jobs that you either love or hate. I think that there were only 781 made. It is said that this special edition bike was brought out in 1981 to commemorate the purchase of Harley back from AMF Corporation. It is called the “buy back” bike.
The bike as you see it is 100% stock. They used the heavily fringed leather saddlebags and leather seat (pogo-stick) on this machine and it looks really nostalgic. It came with a windshield and windshield bag which I have. The bike came with a lot of special features, including a personalized dash if you chose to have it engraved. Mine is still virgin. 1981 was the first year for the 80 cubic inch Shovelhead powerhouse, with the old 4 speed trans; it was chain drive of course. There are 18K original miles on this old baby. This year (2006) it is an antique in Pennsylvania. This bike runs great, but it is an entirely different ride than the new machines. After riding my CVOs, this is like driving an old Model T; technology has really improved. But the bike’s got class. It is a great old Shovelhead. I used it for pictures for my 50th Birthday party.
If there is any further interest, I can dig her out of the garage and take some quality digital pictures of her. Full details on her are in many of the Harley History books.
