Tour-Pak light recall
« on: July 03, 2006, 04:49:54 PM »

Just received a recall letter today to have the Tour-Pak light replaced. They say "The replacement light will prevent the possibility of the light bulb staying on when the lid is closed, possibly resulting in battery drain." Mine has been disconnected since it did just that. Glad to hear that they are going to take care of it. Anybody else received this letter ?

Everyone knew that from almost day one.  Nice they waited to do a recall until an amount of time had passed that most everyone had already replaced them.

Jackasses.  You want to bet there's no reimbursement for having already replaced them with the light they'll now be replacing them with?

Considering there track record on the bright side it will be nice to have a spare, at least one of them will be free. :-/

The letter is dated June 27,2006. There is no recall number designated. The only instructions are to contact your authorized Harley-Davidson dealer to schedule an appointment. You will be required to sign a Warranty Claim. Your build date should tell you if you qualify or not. Then your dealership needs to be up to date on their service bulletins. Good Luck.

Now I'm glad I didn't replace mine! [smiley=banana.gif] Just unplugged it and plug when I need it. ;)

Scot, the green bikes should all be in it and I think all of the red ones too.  Seem to remember the first few yellow bikes showing up with the old light and then the yellows started rolling out with the LED.  Basically if you've got an incandescent bulb in a plastic housing rather than the newer flat LED light you'll end up being involved.

I got the same letter in today's mail as well.  Here's a scan of it you can take to your dealer.  Once they know the recall program actually exists they can check your VIN to confirm program applicability.

Watchya guys, if this light does'nt go off it can melt the tourpak liner if it is fully packed and touching the light itself, I aint got my recall notice yet, but here in the UK we are usually the last to know. ps I wonda if they will replace the liner...ADY, proud owner of yellow CVO (Custard Vehicle Operations), when I learn how to post pics I'll let you see my scoot [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=banana.gif] [smiley=banana.gif]

When my husband saw that some times my light did not go off, he removed it.  Now I have no light to go back to the shop with, and say can you replace it. Do you think they might swap it with out it being attached to the bike?  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Candy, with your experience with dealerships you can really ask that question?

Truth is no one knows.  The service notice exists.  The bike certainly had the light to begin with.  It's an obvious supposition that it had been removed to avoid the now admitted failure.  So should they give you another one?  In a logical world there's no reason not to.  But we're not talking about the logical world; we're talking about the Harley world.  And that can be a Twilight Zone sometimes.

[smiley=oops.gif]Duh!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]  You are so right.  ;D  I will just have to use my persuasive ways and simply ask.  Since I have no light now, it's not like I am missing it anyway.
Just and yet another of those things I am learning to live with and/or without as the case may be.

We were in the same boat for awhile.  Mine stayed on the first night I brought the bike home.  I woke up in the middle of the night that night just needing to touch the bike one more time, wandered out in the garage, and saw light leaking out from inside the tour pak.  Was readily apparent what was going on so might got unhooked that night.

Later at Maggie Valley last year Mike White showed me the "new" lights (tour pak and saddlebag kit) that he'd just done.  A nice replacement system.  So I installed those on both tour paks.  But like many others my failure of the original light happened so far prior to Harley admitting there was a problem that we found the better alternative and did it ourselves before Harley was willing to do anything about it.
