You're right JC, nobody in the US checks citizenship. I have a good friend (a Canadian) who's opened a dealership in Aus, they have a lot of restrictions on "grey market" bikes, mostly due to import restrictions. 2012 is the first year that they've been able to import Road Glides.

They're just checking 'residency' ...a utility bill will do.
When did they start this?  To my knowledge, there aren't any dealerships around here verifying citzenship prior to purchasing a bike. :nixweiss:

I am a Canadian and have a "residence" in Phoenix, I could buy a "Brand new" US bike, basically using my using my Phoenix address to show "residency" register insure and drive it anywhere in the US I want, and it will be still covered by HD 2 year Warranty. However, as a Canadian Citizen I can not just drive the bike across the US/Canada Border and then ride it back to the US say in the fall. Due to our Canadian Customs Regulations I would have to import the bike into Canada, an easy thing to do.

The 2010 CVO Ultra I did buy in the US has been imported into Canada and I can come and go as I please.

The bike will have to be registered to a Canadian address when it is decalred at the border, when it is brought back across to have the warranty work done the US dealer will figure out that the bike is now a Canadian citizen (plates and or permit), how would you expect them to submit the warranty stuff to HD when they have to include the customer info to claim their money back for the service?

If the correct info is submitted it wouldn't be too hard for the moco to find out what US dealer sold a new bike to a non resident... what kind of penalty do you think they may be subjected to?

I doubt any dealer is going to risk loosing a dealership to help us poor Canadians save a few bucks!

When I ride in the US and required warranty for heared grips and the Dunlop replacement the US HD dealer did not carte about my Alberta registration or my Alberta plate. Provided VIN and thats all they cared about

So there you go guys,  if you have a warranty issue (and the bikes rideable) go for a "vacation" over the border and have your problem fixed stateside.

we had that discussion frequently over here in Europe as many continental Europeans bought their bikes in the UK in the last 2 years - for similar reasons  ;)

While the company started to discourage british dealers to sell "overseas" they strictly enforced H-D worldwide service and warranty as some German dealers tried to refuse servicing imported bikes. It took several people a call with H-D Germany and they got their service date. But as it happened some had to wait 2 or 3 weeks.

But that goes for locals only, travelers all over Europe get serviced first, wherever they may have bought their bikes.
