Complete Stereo upgrade on my SERG. Now doing the lights
« on: December 27, 2011, 12:59:40 AM »

Last year I did a complete stereo upgrade on my 09 SERG. Ripped out everything and replaced it with what you see below. That was supposed to be the end of it but this year I'm making more changes, and upgrading the lights while I'm at it.

This includes the Hawg Wired Four in your face package (300 watts and 4 speakers), an Alpine  iDA -X100 Marine stereo, JL Audio amp, Focal 6X9 poly glass speakers and the Hawg Wired control adapter to allow me to use the stock handle bar controls.

The Alpine stereo is smaller then the stock stereo so I had to fabricate a face plate. I went with 1/4" lexan and painted it to match.

I also needed to fabricate something to centre the stereo in the opening and secure it in the fairing. I used MDF and planned it to size to make sure everything was centred. There are kits available for this but building one was easy, so was the the front face plate.

In the fairing I put the 3 Hawg Wired amps. The smaller 75 watt amps were easy to install and were secured directly to the inner fairing. For the larger amp I had to made a bracket.

Here's a good shot of two of the amps, the crossover, the bracket behind the larger amp and speaker.

Like so many others I went with a second pair of speakers in the fairing. Cutting the holes was pretty easy. Theses are the smaller pair 5 1/4" speakers that come in the Hawg Wired package. They sound fine but the plan is to move the other Hawg Wired speakers to this position and put 6 1/2 " speakers in the factory position.

Here's a good shot of two of the Hawg Wired speakers. I originally had Hog Tunes speakers with the stock stereo. That was a big improvement over the stock, but.....

I was going to stop at this point, with the four fairing speakers and the Alpine stereo. It sounded good but not great. My next step was to add speaker to the bags. Originally i put the speakers in the bag, drilled holes and powered them with the JL Audio amp. Still not great sound so I moved the speaker into the lids. Much nicer.

So here we are getting ready for part II. The plan for this winter is to upgrade the front speakers to 6.5" and maybe add a sub in the bag. I'm also upgrading the lights

A few months ago I picked up the Kuryakyn driving lights for the Road Glide. That was going to be the extent of my light upgrade. But then I started looking around and decided to go with HID lights. The driving lights may be a little redundant with the HID lights but as I already have them I'll be putting them on too.

I was curious to see the different between the stock light and the HID. The photo below doesn't do the HID justice. The stock light,on the left, looks like a near dead flash light compared to the HID.
