Audio problems with FLHXSE2
« on: December 31, 2011, 04:13:03 AM »

Guys, I read the thread on Amp problems with FLHXSE2 but couldn't understand what the problem really was. However yesterday I faced a problem for the first time with the audio system and thought of sharing it with you.

While riding, audio is on, iPod is working fine, sound just suddenly disappears. I try radio, cd all working but no sound. I out the audio off them on again it works fine. There is no pattern for the disappearance of sound. Sometimes it works for an hour without problems and sometimes it cuts off every 5 mins.

Is this the problem you all are facing?

I had the exact same problem, would work for an hour, 5 mins, a whole day, then it just eventually quit. The radio, ipod, cd, volume up and down etc would work just fine but no sound. I took it to my dealer and they said it cant be the head unit. So i took it to a dealer that almost has a f&$K'n clue and sure enough it was the head unit. In the mean time i had installed a aftermarket alpine deck to get me through the summer. I still used the factory amp so that just assured me that it was indeed not a amp issue. You description very much described my issue. Hopefully your dealer has qualified personnel working their unlike my local bums.

chit. My stealer hasn't a clue about nothing. I just hope they give up diagnosing and just decide to change the unit. I am in Egypt and it takes time to move things around here :S

Can you also tell me the alpine unit model you used and if it controls the iPod as well?

Here is the deck i used

http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/ida-x305s

Search around on here, it seems to be a well used product amongst all these great individuals. You can still use leave your ipod in the saddle bag and control it with the deck/hand controls. You just need to remove the stock ipod cable and reroute the cable needed for the alpine deck(supplied) very simple task.

Works very well with

http://hawg-wired.com/product_info.php?cPath=51&products_id=96

Allows you to use your hand controls for volume/next track/pause etc.

Hey Rogzy.

The problem still has not been confirmed over here yet but it looks like the problem is the speakers. My bike has been at the stealer now for a month and still no answer. I have not been back for an update in over 2 weeks. With the holidays and all i am waiting to go back on Tuesday or Wedensday. I think the whole system is alright when it is working. With your ride still under warranty once the problem is corrected it should be OK.......so hold on and we should have an update soon so you can take to your stealer.

Mano and Rogzy, Mine started doing that with about 1800k on it. Mano my dealer said the same thing when i first took it in. Their diagnosing a speaker problem, I refused to believe them hence it always sounded fine when in use up until it completely quit. They had if for a whole day and could not figure it out. They wanted to keep it and try to figure it out. Well that was in the spring and you can only imagine where i told them to go after they mentioned that. I told them to keep the head unit and test that but they swore up and down the head was fine. Hope you guys have better luck. Seems like around here the dealers are holding on to their old school techs and are kinda refusing to educate them on all this new stuff.

Forgot to mention that it is fixed now. I did indeed run a aftermarket deck with the factory speakers and amp, all summer and fall with no issues ever. I pulled it all out and took it to a different dealer cause i wanted all my warranty issues addressed and let them know what happened with every thing. I dropped it off  on a Saturday, Monday morning not even 2 hours into their work day they did confirm that the head unit was no good. All systems a go now. The bike is in warm storage for the winter. But i intend to have all the aftermarket gear back in it along with some other equipment before riding season starts again. Its just good to to have a factory working system to put back in, if i ever decide to sell it.

Isn't this guy saying it looks like a head unit and not an amp issue?

Agree BUT he really does not know what it is yet. Bottom line something is wrong just like the rest of the 2011's. Amp. speakers, head unit...ish.....till HD confirms a positive fix IMO the whole system is bad.

Out of all the members of the long list of owners with audio problems, hasn't any of your dealers come up with any suggestions and/or diagnosis at all?

So far I believe they have been guessing but i do not think a positive fix has been established yet. Most members have had there amps replaced. Some are on there 2 and 3rd amps. Some have had there head units replaced. Some had the problem go away others still have the problem. The best fix i have heard of so far is 2 Disturbed in S.D. He was on his 2nd or 3rd amp till they replaced his speakers. Things seem to be OK with him for now.

In my case they replaced the amp, head unit, complete harness for the ipod and had the ipod tested by Apple. They have gone over all the wiring too. Problem still there. I have 24 270 KM. My problem started at about 4000 KM. The speakers have not been done on my bike yet but some how i think they could be the problem. I will be going to the dealer sometime this week for an update and report back with there findings.

I think you're on to something with the speakers. I had no problems after 10k miles then I replaced the speakers because of fading on the grills. First time out after the speaker install and I lose the left side intermittently. I asked my dealer replaced the amp and I've only been out once since for a couple of hours but it seemed ok, no more dropouts. If it does it again I'll get the speakers changed again
