Handlebars
« on: July 06, 2006, 01:57:51 PM »

I just returned from a 6 day, 2000 mile trip and there are defintely some changes I need to make before to my CUSE before the next long trip.  The seat was giving me problems and I couldn't ride for much over an hour at a time without getting off and taking a break.  However, I don't think it's as much the fault of the seat as it is the handlebars.  I'm 5'10" with a 33" sleeve so I find myself having to reach for the handlebars unless seated in a very upright position.  I think if I could get the bars back 2"-3" I could lean back in a more comfortable position to take some of the pressure off my butt.  Has anybody changed out their bars for some that extend back further?  I know that Harley has the extended reach bars for the Electra Glides. but I don't think they will work on our bikes.  Or if they will can you run the wiring inside the bars?  Anyone have any suggestions and idea of cost?

The other thing that I had a porblem with was the heat coming from between my legs and frying both thighs.  I've written about this before on this forum, but I really need to correct this problem also.  It really gets uncomfortable.  My bike is all stock.  Any suggestions here?  How much help will I get from True Duals?  Can I do the V&H True Duals without doing any other mods?

Thanks for your help. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Being umm....vertically challenged, I had the same problem. The answer for me was new bars.

WILD 1 CHUBBY® FLHT/C BAGGER BAR.

PART # WO575

Custom designed for the FLHT® & FLHTC® Electra Glide® to enhance rider comfort. Depending on rotation when mounted 1.0" - 2.5" more end rise and 1.5" - 2.5" more pullback than the stock bars. An awesome look and they provide much better, ergonomic hand / wrist position for enhanced comfort, leverage and control. The grips are still positioned behind the fairing and they work with the stock cables, brake line and wiring. Pre drilled for internal wiring, knurled and show chrome plated.

Width 34.5", end rise 10.0", center 14.0", pullback 13.0".

Retail Price, $199.95

I love them! The bars are cheap..the dealer labor is expensive, count on 5 hours. There are some on the board who have done this install theirselves, but on this on, I let the dealer do it. I am very happy with it though.

As for the heat, I have true duals on mine and do not have an issue with heat...for what it's worth.

I would say that you can change just the headpipes and be OK....they wouldn't certainly take away alot of the heat your feeling....you'd feel a bit more on the left side....but not nearly as bad as your feeling right now.

For SE_Ultra: I've been thinking about changing my bars and would love to see a picture of yours...can you post pics?

As for the heat, I have the Rhinehart true duals, and there is still a lot of heat generated by the motor that you just can't do much with.  One thing does help a litte though; Change the fixed fairing wings on the bottom of the fairing to the ones that are adjustable.  You can then direct air flow to hit you along with the lower fairing vents being opened.  This does help a little, and every little bit helps.

The backrest is adjustable move it forward

Have you adjusted the rear air shocks ( By Adding Air mine was set a 0 when I picked it up) Pumped it up before we rode off.

The heat, I only notice when idling in traffic as long as we are moving it's not that bad.

As far as the Pipe upgrades it sounds like you are looking for a excuse to do it, Just get your check book out and do it.

These are only my suggestions, of course you can do what you like.

I'm 5' 10" and 32 inseam and 200 lbs and I can ride it stock tank to tank no need to get off unles for fuel  [smiley=soapbox.gif]

We have all been down the seat road and getting a good position is a personal thing but as for your butt, check out this thread.

I rode to CC and did some long days in the saddle and never had an issue with my seat rebuild from Rich's.  Big Al road with me home and his Corbin was great for him.  The stock seat can definitely use some help.

It does amaze me that there aren't more complaints about the heat on these bikes.  Or else mine is just odd.  But even going down the highway at 70 mph if the temp is in the mid 80's or higher it gets uncomfortably hot on my thighs.  Both thighs, can't say one side is any worse than the other.  Just HOT!  Hot to a point that it is uncomfortable.  Certainly didn't have this problem on my '04 Road King.  I have highway pegs and even getting my legs up and out still doesn't help.  In fact the heat is transferring right up through the seat.

So, get rid of the heat, change the handlebars, and maybe get a more comfortable seat.  Take care of those issues and I might really like this bike.

No offense intended, but I don't need any wise cracks at this point.  I've got a problem with a $32k bike and not real happy.  Only honest, helpfull responses appreciated.

Well if it's running that hot....and your sure the seat is off ( ;D ).....your lean.....real lean.....I know your tryna stay stock on the intake setup but a SERT or PC might be worth lookin at.....or perhaps take it back to the dealer and b!tch til they do a Stage I download on it.  But there is really no other reason for it.  Stock mine wasn't that hot...even sitting in traffic it didn't get that hot.....now with the Pipes, SERT and Stage I Air it's still the same without the right thigh getting hot from the crossover pipe.

Running extra lean was one of my first thoughts but in checking the plug it doesn't indicate it's hot.  I would like to do the True Duals, SE Air Kit and a SERT or PC.  But don't know what mufflers to go with.  I don't want anything loud.  Tried the Freedom Cycle package but they were way too loud.  Send 'em back.  I know you have the V&H Ovals, but personally I'm not sure I like the sound of the Ovals.  At least on the bikes I've seen them on.  I'm thinking about Rush mufflers because they have removable baffles that you can change.  Everything from 1.75" to 2.50".  I'd put on the V&H True Duals as that way any slip-on will work.  The problem is finding a good tuner for either the SERT or PC.

Hey Dakota,
I saw some of the guy's in Cripple Creek had these plexi-glass looking heat shields that protected their thighs from the heat of the engine.  I don't know where to find them but they looked fine on the bike.  My SEUC hasn't given me much for excessive heat.  I admit it does get a little hot the odd time but I understand the 103's run a little hotter.
