Diamond Cut Heads
« on: February 12, 2012, 02:34:27 PM »

I currently have the motor down and thinkin of a lil bling on the heads/cylinders .. Have looked at Diamond Head ... but thought perhaps others might have used an alternative source .. ?? It is my understanding that there are legal ramifications so if you would PM me, it might keep the wolves away ..  Thanx :2vrolijk_21:

Diamond Heads has put a stop to a few companies.

I did my last set by taking a dremel to them. They are not perfect but didn't cost $400 either

Took 4 hours on first head/cylinder.....took less than 2 on the other

sorry for being so dusty :huepfenlol2:

Thanx for the reply HOG.. I knew there was some heat on some independents for doin this process..Like you .. I think 400 is a bit much from diamond head peeps not to mention poor service as posted from others ..  what kind of burr did you use and what was the general process.. Did you have local do the powder as well ?? I am in the metal fab biz of sorts and have powder done regularly. usually ornamental items .. any recommendations from your past experiences ??
Thanx

That powder was done by a shop in Monks Corner SC
It was a 4 step process....clear over brandywine over silver over black...and he had to make each coat look like it was marbled. Cleans up beautiful. I call this my beater bike so it gets treated like a red headed step child :coolblue:. Think I might have washed it twice since the rebuild over 2 years ago.
I just used the cylinder looking debur bit that came with the dremmel. The aluminum from the fins clogs the bit so I ended up buying a couple from Snap On that were for aluminum.  I first practiced on a old set of black cylinders, actually the ones that were on the bike when it was wrecked. It had a couple of bent fins. I wasn't too worried about screwing them up. The only two things to worry about was spacing and depth of the cuts. I just overlapped them a little till I thought it looked good to me.
When I first started I used a sharpie to space the grinds, but found free hand much quicker and easier.
Just go to the HD shop and get a set of old cylinders and practice.....Good Luck :2vrolijk_21:

added....the bits were about half the diameter of a pencil eraser but the same height.

Thanks Scott

If you look close it is not a computer programed machine job but it was not $400 either. For someone that is anal....they could tell there are blems. I just ride the bike and can not see them from the saddle :2vrolijk_21:

I must say that I have a set of Diamond Heads on another bike and used theirs as a guide.

Is there any way of doing it without cracking the heads?  I love the look, but not sure I want to take the heads apart if  I don't have to.

What do you mean by "cracking the heads"

To powdercoat they need to be disassembled

If you are going to cut the fins then they can stay assembled....just make sure to get all the excess aluminum pieces from the head before install

Heads/Cylinders back w/bling .. After deliberating , I decided to go ahead and do the powder coat/diamond cut .. Ricks of Memphis Tn did the prep and powder coating and off to Vegas area they went .. BIG thanx to folks at Diamond Heads ( Holly ) and staff for the GREAT  job they did and in a very timely manner even though they are having some trying times in their family loss .. Thanx to ALL .. now the build goes on ..

I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself, with a dremel, whatever.

Diamond Heads are worth the extra money.  Look at the level of detail they did on mine.

I wasn't expecting them to diamond cut the screaming eagle but it looks perfect.

Highly recommend the show cut.  Got mine done for $500.
