Zumo 660 speed vs permitted speed limit
« on: February 27, 2012, 05:13:24 AM »

:bananarock: Does anyone know how to switch off the speed detection 'feature' on the 660?
The unit knows how fast I am going, it also knows the authorised speed limit where I am driving.
It then decides to advise me that I am exceeding the speed limit,(how nice, as if I didn't know!)
It disconnects the radio/music and over the intercom plays a very annoying bing every 1-2 seconds.
this continues until you either slow down to the permitted speed or move out of the speed zone.

I could be listening to a very ompirtant piece of music, news item or traffic update.....doh!
Pain in the a*se.  :nixweiss:

my 660 doesn't do that - does Garmin sell a special big brother version to Americans only?

My 660 displays the local speed limit for the current location.  It doesn't whine and complain if you go beyond that speed though.  Must be a software control to turn the function on and off.  Either that or his isn't really doing it and he's just got a very guilty conscience causing GPS delusion.

My 660 doesn't do that either, the ringing in my head when I speed is usually my BSR bangin' on my helmet  :huepfenlol2:

There is a setting to turn it off somewhere in settings.  I don't have my 660 handy to try to find it, but I have seen it and I am quite sure it's there.

Could it be part of the "Speed Camera" warning?  Have you loaded a speed camera file?

:2vrolijk_21:    Exactly.  The audible warning is part of the speed or security camera optional service, not part of the basic software.  I'd suggest contacting Garmin to see if the audio can be disabled and just leave the visual blinking, or if you can just remove that service completely.

I just went out and scrolled thru the menu...I do not see a setting to turn that on/off.  Mine does not do this, it only highlights the speed in RED when you are exceeding the posted speed limit.  Perhaps it is something in the European Map software?  Have you tried going to "My Garmin" on the internet and hooking your unit up to see if it needs any updates to the internal software/firmware?

If this is what it is, then you can turn them off here:
Tools->Setttings->Proximity Points->Proximity Alerts(change)

I simply turned off the whole "Navigation" prompts and warnings...  I don't need to hear Jill or John or whomever has the most pleasent sounding voice, mispronounce all of the street names anyway...

I have noticed though that the indicated speed limits (as posted on the road) are synced almost perfectly (within 10 yards) with the GPS... I guess someone really put in a lot of unnecessary research into the idea...

Of course we all know when we're slightly over the posted limit...  but who has the time to actually watch the speedometer when out on some lonesome stretch of road when you're by yourself... unless of course you are trying to set a personal speed record that is.

For the most part (anywhere), it's stay up with the flow of traffic, or get run over... cause everyone knows that the cages can't see us anyway.

I've always been a proponent of mandatory motorcycle training for everyone... whether they like it or not, riding two wheels will almost always give the driver of a car/truck a whole new appreciation for looking out for the other guy... it's funny how I will (most of the time) notice the intent of the drivers in front of me, even before they realize they're about to change lanes or turn in front of someone.

What scares me most is the PANIC look I can see in their behavior, once they notice me in there mirrors.  Sends a chill everytime... they'll slow way down, or start weaving inside their lane, or sometimes make that sudden shudder like they've seen a ghost or something.

Anyway, this got way too long for a simple answer to a simple question...

Just turn off the Navigation Sounds on the unit... I mean really, how many of us really need to know where we're at... and to loosely quote a standard... "It's not about the Destination, it's all about the Journey"   8)

That accuracy surprised me too.  It even became a game for a bit finding city streets I knew had repetitive limit changes within several block ranges to see if the unit really kept up.  The game got boring after about twenty minutes though.  Now I need a new game....

This is all great stuff people.
except this unit is asis out of the bag, only thing downloaded is software update from Garmin. There are no POI's or anything else.
I have also been unable to find anywhere to switch the voice off, as suggested.
i have emailed Garmin support to investigate.

How come its only me then? (no smart answers either!!!)  :orange:
Unless it's a special for the UK market only!!

The only thing I can at present is to turn the thing off when it happens.  :nixweiss:

cheers for the assistance as always.

Unfortunately most of us can't answer with any specificity since we've got the North American version.  The base options may or may not be the same. Without seeing them side by side just can't know.  Sorry 'bout that....
