Having almost literally grown up in a gas station and then a garage and machine shop you find that those environments engender lots of conversations.  Kind of like bars or barber shops.

The majority of people really can discuss politics, religion, rights and wrongs.  But for reasons I never understood folks get "religious" about their brand of oil though.  Often far more than they got about their religion.

People would get seriously angry if they thought they got Shell rather than Havoline (then both standard MidContinent products).  They didn't know why they were upset.  But upset they would be.  Always did (and does) make me smile....  :)

Dood...no, you wouldn't be the direct cause, but it might make a guy get a bad case of the "wants" being around all these fine scoots we're going to see in MV!!

On the oil topic...like 2ln says, this is worse than talking about religion or politics.

Mobil or Amsoil doesn't have to warranty my motor, any more than any other oil company would have to warranty your Honda, Subaru, Audi, Porche, Dodge, Ford, etc, etc, etc.  All they have to do is produce a product that meets or exceeds the specifications necessary to meet the stringent testing required by the petroleum industry to "grade" a particular product, and also meet the specs for the engine manufacturers recommended lubricants.  Some products will just baaaarely meet those specs, some will far exceed them.  I will choose accordingly, as I always have, based on objective information, and yes, subjective as well.  Everybody else I'm sure will do the same.

No problems....it's all good!! [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Shell always left that foamy sludge in the valve covers of BMC products, like TR6 and MG.  Hated the stuff and could always tell if someone ran it.  Back in those days I always ran Valvoline.

Hub, the synthetics don't need to be run away from.  Just give her the good stuff man, that sweet smelling Amsoil or the tender flavors of Mobil 1.  It's just that cheap potato vodka Syn3 that gives Maude the tummy ache.

Yeah, I think the worst Vodka I ever drank was, POPPOV.  We used to call it POW! POW!  I totally understand the "Synthetic Grail."  Especially, in my situation, the "cooling" advantage.  I have to have it.  OTIS changed all three for me, Friday nite.  He put HD 20W-50 in the Crankcase, and regular HD Gear Oil in the Tranny and Primary.  Gonna' run that until my Red-Line Shockproof gets here.  Had to Order it from Advance Auto.  What's the recommended Mobil 1, for "Big Motors", or does it matter?  I can probably get that through my Distributor at the Dealership.  Please advise.  Later--HUBBARD

Look for Mobil 1 V Twin.  It's about as good as we're going to find for our air cooled applications Hub.

I've used Amsoil for a long long time and it's been a great product too.  But I'll be changing to the Mobil 1 product when my current case of Amsoil is used up.  Not for any fault of Amsoil but simply for convenience.

Around here Amsoil always has to be ordered from somewhere.  And the dealers come and go like hookers sneaking in and out of a Jimmy Swaggert look-alike convention.  So you always have to find someone again when you need to reorder.

Fortunately a local parts store has started stocking the Mobil 1 V Twin.  So that made it an easy change for me.

Hey Don, in one short sentence you managed to insult Amsoil, its dealers, hookers, Jimmy Swaggert, his followers, and anyone who looks like him.  Very efficient.

Yeah Hub....like Don said, the Amsoil is an excellent product, but it's just a bit of a beauch to find locally, unless you go to one of the Metric dealers, and they often have it...but, you wont get the case prices then.  Advanced Auto, some Wal Marks, AutoZones have the Mobil 1 VTWIN, if you cant' order through your shop. They may not have it on the shelf though, so be sure and ask someone before you walk out.

You will not be disappointed in this product!!  Good to use in the crankcase and the primary, even if you don't want it in your tranny.

I was going to try Mobil 1 V Twin also. I can buy it locally at the Mobil distributor.
What makes it better than Syn 3?? (apart from being 4 bucks a quart cheaper) $16 a quart for Mobil 1 is better than $20 for Syn 3  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Cheers

Aussie...there's a whole bunch of stuff in this thread and other threads on oil and oil filters that can help you be more informed as to why people are switching from Syn3.  Really, the bottom line is that it is just a superior product, particularly if you ride in hot weather a great deal.  Personally, I can notice a difference in the way the engine sounds and performs.

I also read in another post, on another site, that syn3 is not a true synthetic at all, but a blend...much like some of the Castrol and Shell products.  It would not surprise me at all, as nobody seems to be able to find out for sure exactly who makes Syn3.  Go with the Mobil 1 VTWIN, particularly if it's readily available...you will know that you have put one of the best possible lubricants in your 103.

The biggest difference is that its not made by HD ! And for some folks that's all the difference that matters. Use whatever you want its your Ride! I use Syn3  (HD) @5000miles and HP4 gold (wing)@ 8000miles No strange noise and No Strange colors  [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]
