Amp and Quality speakers
« on: March 09, 2012, 08:15:24 AM »

Since I'm tired of fooling with the stock set up I need some Help.I would like to keep the stock radio but up grade the amp and speakers,Since the tweeters are 1ohm can I just put 2 gauges back in where the tweeters are and just get 4 quality speakers, with out changing too much wiring ,Seems like th main problems are the tweeters,Or are there any after market tweeters that any one knows about?I would like to go with the rockford fosgate amps, since I have used them for years in car stereos.

Take a look at "TIF2's" set up below and maybe take some pieces from it, I think it is a complete system and very well done, just my thoughts.

All of the speakers on the SESG2/3 are 1ohm. This is what makes it a pain to do mods to the system in stages. It becomes a "leave it or chuck it" thing with the stock audio system. Additionally, all of the speakers are wired in parallel so that means running at least some new wires from the new amp to at least one set of speakers. You didn't metion if you plan on adding lid speakers or not so we'll just concentrate on the fairing and lowers. This is just one of the possibilities - but it will all need to be done at the same time:

Replace the stock amp with an RF300/4
Add a set of Hybrid Audio Unity component speakers (4-ohm) to the fairing - you can install the Unity tweeters in the stock tweeter mounts
Add a set of Hybrid Audio Imagine coax speakers to the lowers (4-ohm)
Wire the new component speakers to the RF amp using new wiring
Utilize existing wiring from the RF amp to the speakers in the lowers

Of course, there are other brands of great quality speakers that could be used in the same system design (JL Audio, Hertz, Focal)... dunno what your budget is for speakers. The m ost important thing is the new system design.

Hope this helps ...

Oh yeah ... I keep forgetting about the RF300/2 that just became available  :)

In the case of using the RF-300/2, take everything I wrote above but there  is no need to run new wiring. I can build you a harness that will plug in to the factory Molex MX150 connector. Still need to replace all the speakers (with 4-ohm), but the RF-300/2 will drive a 2-ohm load, therefore, you can utilize the exisiting parallel wiring on the bike for the speakers. Because you'd want to use components in the fairing, you would wire the existing connector going to the 5.25" stock fairing speakers to the input of the component speakers x-overs, then run new wiring to both the woofer and the tweeter of the component speakers.

Sounds harder than it is. You can also run an Arc 125.2mini in this fashion. PM mjb765 (Mike) as he just completed this setup on his SESG2 with an Arc 125.2mini - including using several harnesses I built for him.

I don't even have my new ride yet and I know i will want to modify the system. I am getting the CVO SG so I have 8 speakers including in the lids.  I too don't want to redo all the wiring but I do want really good sound.  would really like a plug and play solution.  New amp and new speakers, but not alot of wiring, splicing, soldering etc.

TIF2 any help and/or guidance you could offer would be highly appreciated.

Well ... it kinda has 8 speakers. I mean ... I have component speakers in all locations except the lowers. It's really 4 sets (fairing, lowers, lids, and pods) so 8 speakers. I could, I suppose, say that I have 14 speakers total but it really serves no purpose. :)

If you upgrade to high quality component speakers in the fairing the first order of business is to ditch the 2 additional tweeters that come stock on the bike. Once you get a good set of components in the fairing you'll never miss the stock tweeters.

I too don't want to redo all the wiring but I do want really good sound.  would really like a plug and play solution.  New amp and new speakers, but not alot of wiring, splicing, soldering etc.

Uhhhhh .... drink heavily?  ;)

On a serious note - do a "front stage" upgrade only. Upgrade the amp in the fairing; upgrade the speakers in the fairing and lowers (ala my advice for trahog). Leave the rear system (stock amp in saddle-bag and stock lid speakers) alone. It complicates things greatly to attack the rear portion of the audio on the SESG3 - significant amounts of wiring involved. The good news is that it would probably sound pretty damn good just doing the front stage coupled with the stock rear system. Won't sound as good as upgrading ALL of it mind you, but the amount of work avoided may make the sacrifice in audio quality for the rear setup worth it.

That is, of course, something only you can decide.

Hope this helps ....

TIF2 whats your thoughts? The speakers where the focal165KRC and the arc Audio KS125.2 amp 250watts continuous power 8-12 Amps current draw.by far the cleanest sounding system I heard at bike week and I spent all day listening to all of the vendors

I think the Arc/Focal combo is a great setup.
But don't count out the RF amps. Not sure what speakers the RF's were driving but the speakers are critical to the sound of the system.

If you heard my setup you would think the Arc/Focal setup was a bit lacking  :)

As long as you get quality speakers ... both the RF and the Arc will serve you well.
